Mr Ed Green, Director of Rowing

  • We understand that children occasionally need to stay home when they are unwell. To ensure we can correctly and legally record your child’s absence, we must receive daily notification from parents/carers.

    The Daily Check-In

If your child is ill and unable to attend school, please remember:

    1. Notify us on the first day: Email the Division

    2. Notify us for every subsequent day: We cannot assume your child is still ill. If they are absent for multiple days, you must contact the Division each morning to confirm their continued absence and the reason.

    3. Why this is crucial: Without daily notification, we are unable to authorise the absence. Unauthorised absences can trigger welfare checks or formal attendance procedures.

Your cooperation helps us accurately monitor attendance, meet our safeguarding obligations, and ensure your child's record is correct.

Thank you for helping us keep our attendance records up to date.

  • The Christmas holidays are a prime target for hackers and fraudsters because people are busy preparing for the festivities and may not pay close attention to any emails they receive. As a result, we wish to reiterate our guidance on how to identify fraudulent and genuine emails from Pangbourne.

    How to Spot Fraudulent Emails

    • Be cautious of urgent action emails: Phishing emails often create a sense of urgency to pressure recipients into immediate action. If you receive an email threatening negative consequences or loss of opportunity, carefully review it for flaws or inconsistencies before taking any action. It is highly unlikely to be from the College.

    • Pay attention to grammar and spelling mistakes: Phishing emails often contain noticeable grammar and spelling errors. Legitimate emails from the College are carefully reviewed and spell-checked. Unusual mistakes may indicate a phishing attempt.

    • Verify the sender's email address: Hover your mouse over the sender's email address to check for misspellings or inconsistencies. Legitimate emails from the College will have a consistent and recognisable email address structure, as outlined below.

    • Check for inconsistencies in email addresses, links, and domain names: Phishing emails may use deceptive email addresses, links, or domain names. Always compare the sender's address with previous emails from the College and hover over links to ensure they lead to legitimate websites. Be particularly alert to the domain part of the email address – the @pangbourne.com part. it is common practice to use a slight variant e.g., pangburne.com etc.

    • If it seems too good to be true... : Phishing emails often promise rewards or incentives to entice recipients into clicking on malicious links or opening attachments. Exercise caution when encountering such emails.

    • Avoid sharing sensitive information: Emails requesting login credentials, payment information, or sensitive data should be treated with caution. Be wary of unexpected or unfamiliar senders and refrain from providing any information unless you are certain of the email's legitimacy.

In addition, we do not offer discounts for paying school fees in advance. Many of our parents now pay by direct debit, which is covered by various financial guarantees and there is an option to pay annual fees over 9-months on an interest free basis. More information on this is available by emailing billing@pangbourne.com.

How to Identify Genuine Emails from Pangbourne

    • We use My School Portal for much of our communication with you. This sends an email and a copy is also stored in the portal under ‘My Children’ and ‘College Messages’.

    • Unless the message is purely informational, it will be personalised with your details e.g. Dear Mr Smith and it will have a named member of staff in the sign-off.

    • The Pangbourne brand will be clearly visible.

    • The sender of a College email will have the email address format originator@pangbourne.com. Messages sent via the portal will have either the senders Pangbourne email address or noreply@pangbourne.myschoolportal.co.uk. Common email addresses we use include:

    • Our emails will never ask you to disclose confidential or financial information, and we will never advise you of a change of our bank details in this wayOur bank details are clearly stated on the fee invoice.

    • Some messages originate from ISAMS, our main information system. These are typically from admissions or billing, where a portal message is not practical or appropriate. They will follow the same rules as above but do not appear in the portal.

If in doubt, contact College reception directly (0118 984 2101) and verify. Do not use any other number provided in the email.

Improvements to the Securly Home Service:

From Monday 1 December we will activate alerts on the Securly Home service. This means that you will now receive a pop-up in the app if your child attempts to access a restricted site or other concerning activity. If your child makes use of an Easy4U device and you have not yet registered, please complete this form.

  • On Thursday 4 December, Moulsford Prep School will be using the Chapel for their annual Carol Service. Moulsford parents have been requested to arrive after 18:30 but in case of any early arrivals, please could all parents be aware that traffic may be busier than normal around this time.

  • Looking ahead to the Charlotte Drake Society’s January meeting, we are looking for female delegates to speak to girls in Years 10-13 about their careers.

The Women's Careers Network Event will take place on Monday 26 January between 19:00 - 21:00 in Devitt House. Now in our fourth year of this successful event, we hope to be able to host as many delegates as possible to come and speak to the Charlotte Drake Society.

If you would be interested in coming to talk about your career and help inspire the girls to see what they can be, please email cds@pangbourne.com

All Pupils & Parents - Years 7- Upper Sixth

All Pupils - Years 7- Upper Sixth

  • This afternoon, we have the second annual Christmas Lights extravaganza. This will hopefully be a bit of fun and help get the students into the Christmas spirit. This event is for pupils only. Timings are as follows:

    • 16:30: Band form up outside Devitt.

    • 16:35: Dunbar and Year 10 released to Parade Square from Prep and Clinics.

    • 16:40: Remainder of students released and Parade Square closed to all traffic.

    • 16:41: Hot Chocolate will be served on the veranda area of Mess Hall - students collect a cup and move to congregate in front of Devitt where the Band / Core of Drums will be playing Christmas music. Words for carols will be distrubuted to staff and students.

    • 16:50: with students assembled, a senior member of staff will say a few words and then Mr Gillthorpe will lead the whole College into a the first Christmas song/carol backed by the Band.

    • 16:55: Mr Gillthorpe will introduce the Dunbar chiefs who will do a countdown for everyone to join in with and then they will "switch" the lights on.

    • 16:56: College community to sing second Christmas song/ carol.

    • 17:01: Finish and students are dismissed to get their belongings to go home or get on school bus.

    • 17:05: Parade Square opened to traffic.

Thank you in advance for the slight traffic jam this will cause on the drive. Hopefully the weather will be on our side. As ever, huge thanks to Lewis and the Estates team for all their effort to deliver this event!

  • We are absolutely delighted to announce the following poetry competition winners in each age category in this year's Poetry writing competition:

Isla - your poem Silent Shadows on the Ocean's Veil shows incredible maturity and vocabulary. Your consistent rhyme scheme and depiction of a vessel's adventures on the ocean are particularly poignant and relevant to the College's history - well done!

Abi - likewise, your choice of rhyme scheme keeps a rhythm and beat that mimics a heartbeat throughout - a really clever marrying of form and structure to show how the Compass Within guides you as you adventure through life.

Lottie - I know (from our conversations in class) that you are imitating Keats'  in your Sonnet, The Quiet Venture - you have done this brilliantly! A wonderful connection between form and diction using some lovely literary techniques to convey your sense of courage to adventure quietly in pursuit of our dreams.

Each winner has won a £15 Book Token. Furthermore, each poem has been printed and will be displayed in the English Department and in a booklet with all other entries that Ms Keane is kindly compiling.

A huge well done to everyone that entered!

    MrsElly Hayward, Head of English

  • The next meeting of the Charlotte Drake Society will take place on Monday 1 December between 18:30 and 19:45 in The Old Library. All girls in Years 11-13 are invited to attend. Our first event in the New Year will be our Women's Careers Network Event which will take place on Monday 26 January between 19:00 - 21:00 in Devitt House. This is always such a brilliant evening and is so informative for our girls so please be sure to put this date in your diaries.

Mrs Elly Hayward, Head of English

  • SOCS sign ups for Lent Term activities will open at midday on Monday 5 January for ALL STUDENTS. These will be open for that week and close on Thursday 8 January at 18:00.

There are some new activities such as Rugby 7's, Poetry Slam, and Hockey development. Rowing for Year 9 will be an activity on offer. This is for Year 9 students who want to row this term for their chosen sport and have a passion for pursuing rowing.

Activities are on a first come, first served basis. Sixth Form may choose an SPS slot on either Monday or Thursday but should try to take a leading role in an activity on the other day. With careful coordination, that role can count towards your D of E volunteering and holds great value in UCAS applications.

It is expected that all students sign up for a Monday Afternoon Activity.

Year 7 - 8 (Dunbar)

  • I would like to make all Dunbar parents aware of two events taking place in the final week of term. The first is the Dunbar Disco which takes place on the evening of Wednesday 10 December from 19:00-21:00 in the Dunbar Dayroom. All pupils are welcome, but there is no requirement to attend and there will be no charge for this event. We do require however that all Day Pupils return home after school on the Wednesday before returning in the evening, whilst Boarders will return to their Boarding House. Pick-up for Day Pupils will be from Dunbar at 21:00.

The second event is the Dunbar Pantomime trip to see 'Robin Hood & Maid Marian' at the Newbury Corn Exchange on Thursday 11 December. We have tickets booked for the 10:00 performance, and pupils should therefore come in at the normal time, after which we will register them and then depart, returning in time for the Christmas Lunch back at the College.

Pupils may wear home clothes for the Panto trip, but will need to bring in Games kit as well for the afternoon. Please find here the permission form for this trip, which should be completed at your earliest convenience, and by Friday 5 December at the latest.

Dr Ian Hart, Head of Junior House

  • If you missed the Year 9 webinar on Wednesday, please view the recording via this link. The passcode is +*$0Yi.7

A huge thank you for everyone who attended the webinar on GCSE options.

On Monday 8 December pupils will have their form to make some initial choices, these are not binding and can be completely changed at the final options deadline in March 2026.

Mr Anthony Hammond, Head of KS3

  • The revision guides which were ordered before half term have now been distributed to all students.

Please do contact vanessa.saunders@pangbourne.com if you ordered a set for your child and they do not have theirs in any subject. These will provide exam-targeted core knowledge for all subjects and should be a useful resource to draw upon, particularly when it comes to making flashcards.

Mrs Abbie Stephenson, Head of KS4

  • Due to the large absence rates in Year 11 last week and this week, we still have some students catching up on trials papers.

We will endeavour to start returning results and papers to students next week and you should have results available at the Parents’ and Guardians’ meeting on Wednesday 3 December. This meeting will start at 16:00 and finish at 19:30 and will take place in Drake Hall.

This face to face meeting is a really important moment in their progression to GCSEs in the summer. As I told the students yesterday, how they respond to these trials and what they do next, in readiness for February and beyond, will determine what ends up on their results sheets in the summer. It is the learning from this experience and stepping on that is the vital part of the process.

Booking opens today, Friday 28 November at 18:00 on School Cloud and a user guide can be found here, should you need it.

The easiest way to access School Cloud is via the College Portal here, then click the 'Parent Evenings' tile on the dashboard. You should be automatically logged in.

In advance of the meeting, a report will be generated from the new Pupil Progress system which will give detailed feedback on Trials performance. This will uploaded to the Portal and will be visible in the 'My Child's Documents' section. Teachers will also have hard copy versions at the meeting.

Mrs Abbie Stephenson, Head of KS4

Year 9 - 11

Those students who are not attending and have informed Ms Kaur are not expected to be in College that day.

COLLEGE NEWS THIS WEEK

Year 11 Trip to Oxford

What an enjoyable and successful day. Year 11 saw Oxford at its finest in the beautiful December sunshine. The Illusion Museum was a hit - not just with the students...see the photo below where Mrs Stephenson hits all her life goals of being much taller! Itsu and Popeyes were the most popular destinations to enjoy some extra lunch. I'm so pleased that the behaviour of all Year 11 was impeccable, they really did us proud and made the most of a day to relax after the strain of Trials. Huge thanks to Mr Yuille, Mr Leigh, Mr Quentin, Mrs Linsey, Mrs Ellis, Mrs Athendriou and Mrs Payne who came along for the day and without whom this would not have been possible.

A Special Visit from the High Sheriff of Berkshire

We were honoured to welcome Sean Taylor, the High Sheriff of Berkshire, to Pangbourne College on Monday. The High Sheriff of Berkshire is the Sovereign’s representative for law and order in the county, an office dating back over a thousand years, making it the oldest secular role in the UK. Today, the position focuses on supporting the judiciary, police, voluntary organisations and the wider community.

Sean Taylor, appointed as High Sheriff for 2025–26, is a respected business leader and a passionate supporter of local charities. His shrieval year is dedicated to the theme of education, with a particular focus on his nominated charities: Berkshire Community Foundation and Learning to Work.

As part of his visit, Mr Taylor also spent time at the Falkland Islands Memorial Chapel, a significant and deeply meaningful monument here in Berkshire. The Chapel stands as a place of remembrance and reflection and we were proud to share its history and importance with him. During his time at the College, Mr Taylor met with students and staff, learned more about life at Pangbourne and shared inspiring insights about community service, leadership and the importance of supporting young people as they step confidently into their futures.

We are grateful for his time, encouragement and commitment to education across Berkshire.

Boarders Take Part in the White Ribbon Day Walk

White Ribbon day took place on Tuesday 25 November. This day works to end violence against women and girls. To recognise this, on Monday evening all our boarders got together and took part in a walk around campus to shine light on the truth that women and girls don’t feel safe to walk alone at night. The boarders walked with glow sticks and also were allowed to bring a hot drink of their choice.

SPORT

1st XV Take the Win against Embley College at the Rugby Night Game

On Friday 21 November, the rugby 1st XV played a brilliant match against Embley College. There was a great turn out of supporters ranging from friends and family as well as current pupils and staff. Our catering team supplied hot dogs and hot and cold drinks for everyone in attendance. There was a great atmosphere throughout the whole evening and our boys came away with a 36-0 win.

The Equestrian Team Secure their Place at the County Finals at Hickstead

Pangbourne Equestrian have once again been crowned Berkshire County Champions and secured their place at the County Finals at Hickstead (May 2026). The team of Team Captain Olivia, Sophie and Connie were the highest place team in Berkshire in the 1m class, narrowly missing out on the overall win - Pangbourne’s times were quicker but one rail proved costly. Connie was unbeatable with a fast paced, competitive round to take the over win and is the individual Berkshire County Champion at 1m.

Olivia took 4th overall, 2nd in Berkshire in the hotly contested 1.10m class. Earlier on in the day Annabelle placed 5th in the 80cm with her new Partnership and the team of Connie, Annabelle and Izzy placed 5th in the 90cm.

BOARDING UPDATES

The last few weeks in Port Jackson have been full and productive. Our Year 11 and Upper Sixth boys have been deep in their Trial exams, showing real focus despite many succumbing to the winter cold that has been doing the rounds in the house. Even so, the mood has stayed positive, with plenty of quiet study time and the usual good humour helping everyone push through.

Now the boys are looking ahead to what comes next. There is real excitement around the upcoming trip to the Winchester Christmas Market, a welcome chance to step out, enjoy the lights, and pick up some festive spirit. The European rugby match between Gloucester and Castres is another highlight that has sparked plenty of chat and anticipation.

And, of course, the Christmas stand down is in sight. The boys are ready for a well earned break, time with family, and a proper recharge before the new term.

Paul Radford, Head of Port Jackson

It has been a busy few weeks in Adelaide.

The Upper Sixth and Year 11s have been hard at work in preparation for their Trials. The boys have benefitted from having academic staff available to them in the evenings in Houses, meaning they have been completing additional work and revision in the company of their teachers.

On Monday, all of our boys took part in the walk for White Ribbon Day around the site. On Tuesday, they enjoyed watching the Chelsea vs. Barcelona football match, accompanied by several of their peers from Port Jackson. On Thursday, Adelaide hosted a Thanksgiving event for all boarders, where they enjoyed a Thanksgiving meal, wrote thank you cards and enjoyed party games and American snacks. Games included 'Pin the Tail on the Turkey', Corn Hole, 'Shake Your Tail Feathers', Pumpkin Bowling and Oreo Rolling. Food comprised of cherry pie and American sweets & chocolate (Hershey's, Mike and Ikes, Tootsie Rolls and Charlston Chews).

The boys in Adelaide also did a 'Turkey Hunt' around the House which involved finding hidden turkeys with clues attached.

Olly Metcalfe, Head of Adelaide

We've had a busy week in St George; the girls impressed us with their time and effort in preparing for Trial examinations while balancing some well-deserved rest. On Monday, we walked to raise awareness about women's safety (please see more information about this in the College News section). Adelaide hosted a Thanksgiving event on Thursday, which was a lot of fun. Tonight, the girls will relax with a board game night, followed by a sushi afternoon on Saturday, before visiting the Winchester Christmas markets on Sunday afternoon.

Shannon Flynn, Head of St George

DIVISIONAL UPDATES

The next Divisional update will be Friday 5 December.
