Provision will be made for pupils up until this time if they are unable to leave earlier.

The next overnight leave will also take place in the Summer Term from Friday 1 May to Monday 4 May 2026.

Mr Ed Green, Director of Rowing

  • As we continually review the transport routes to accommodate the needs of our current pupils, a new stop has been incorporated into the Henley route. This will now include a stop in Emmer Green, Peppard Road, Courtney Drive. For further information please visit Vectare’s website or contact Vectare via their online contact form.

However, it has come to our attention that there are some current concerns with the daily bus routes and service delivered by our preferred company. Our daily bus service is a key part of our day provision and its sole purpose is to make it as easy as possible to come to Pangbourne. We are very sorry if the service has not been up to the standards we seek to maintain. We appreciate the additional stress this can cause and the detriment this can have on family life. As busy parents juggling competing demands on our time, the bus service should make life easier. We are looking into this and hope to resolve any issues as soon as possible. In order to remove any friction from the start and end of the day for parents, we will send out a very brief survey to families that use the buses in order to find the blocks and remove them.

  • Enhancing our Adventure offering, we're running a two day Rock Climbing trip on Friday 8 to Saturday 9 May 2026 in the Brecon Beacons. This is open to all pupils in Year 8 and above and it is a chance for pupils of all abilities to develop existing skills as well as to try out something new.

Overnight accommodation will be in YHA and approx cost will be £220 per pupil.

For more information please contact fergus.yuille@pangbourne.com.  Previous climbing experience is not essential but is beneficial. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis

  • Adventure: One of the areas that was highlighted in the parent survey was our adventure programme. Not wanting to allow any of us to rest on our laurels we are about to start work on getting a mountain bike course through the College grounds. This will be designed and built by the students themselves. There will be an announcement in assembly on Monday asking for volunteers to join a working party to identify, mark out and then dig out and build the course. This will be a labour of love.

Divisional spaces: The furniture for the Year 11 breakout rooms is in hand and some is in transit from suppliers and some is being moved from storage. We look forward to these rooms being up and running shortly.

  • This festive season, we’re inviting you to join our school-wide appeal in support of the local charity Reading Family Aid. They are collecting gifts for teenagers aged 13–16, an age group that too often misses out. By donating a thoughtful gift, you can help make a real difference in a young person’s life.

    Here’s how you can help:

    • Please choose new items if possible; high-quality second-hand goods are also accepted.

    • Aim for items that suit ages 13–16: something fun, practical or creative.

    • Drop your gifts in the collection box in Divisions by Monday 8 December.

Every gift counts. Together, we can spread a little extra joy this Christmas!

Thank you for your generosity and kindness.

    Please see the poster here.

All Pupils - Years 7- Upper Sixth

Year 7 - 8 (Dunbar)

  • Greetings from the Dunbar desk!

As I write, the weather has just taken a dramatic turn for the colder, and this prompts me to mention clothing. With the drop in temperatures, please do send children in with whatever clothing they will need to keep warm. Coats should be navy blue or black ideally, and should have limited decoration or branding, and gloves, hats, scarves and snoods etc. are all welcome. When the weather is cold the children are welcome to wear these items around the College, and just need to take them off when they enter the classroom. Similarly on the games field, both White’s Field (football) and the astro pitch can be pretty exposed and cold, so plenty of thermal layers, undershirts etc. are vital to keep warm. If you have any questions about what clothes and uniform is necessary or permitted then please do ask. A final plea is to ensure that any items of clothing or accessories brought into College are named as undoubtedly items do get mislaid and it makes life much easier to reunite them with their owner!

The other big change since Half Term has of course been the longer evenings. The area around Dunbar is fairly dark and congested, and the children are not always good at looking where they should be going, or keeping an eye open for danger. With this in mind, please be mindful of vehicle speed in this area, and expect a little person to suddenly pop out when you least expect it. I have seen several near misses recently around the Dunbar roundabout, and I want to minimise the chance of any potential accident.

As we move towards the end of term, we have a number of events coming up. Our prefects and promoted pupils are planning an Inter-Watch Quiz and a ‘Dunbar’s Got Talent’ event for the pupils, and then towards the end of term we have our Dunbar Disco on the evening of Wednesday 10 December. This is open to all Dunbar pupils, and there is no cost to attend. It will run from 19:00 - 21:00 but please note that day pupils will not be able to stay in Dunbar until 19:00, and will need to return home or to a friend’s house to change between the end of the school day and the start of the Disco. Boarders may of course go back to their Boarding House as always.

The day after the Disco is our traditional Dunbar trip to the Newbury Corn Exchange Pantomime. This year’s thespian treat is ‘Robin Hood and Maid Marian’ and we will be attending the 10:00 morning showing on Thursday 11 December. We will all return to Dunbar after the panto, in time for Christmas lunch and then the Divisional and Inter-Watch ergo competition. The permission form for the panto will be coming out separately later.

We were treated to a visit from a professional singer this week, and the Dunbar Choristers had the fantastic opportunity to experience several vocal workshops, and an individual lesson as well. I popped in to see what it was all about and I was so impressed by the enthusiasm and ability of our young singers - well done all of you!

Well done also to two of our Dunbar sportsmen and sportswomen. Noah in Year 8 competes regularly in middle-distance and cross-country races, and has recently been ranked #2 in the country in his age-group. Sophie in Year 8 has been training in Tang Sou Dao (a Korean Martial Art) for 5 years and recently won a Bronze medal in her first competition. Many congratulations to both Noah and Sophie, and please continue to pass on the good news about your children’s sporting and co-curricular achievements - I love to hear what they are getting up to outside the College.

Dr Ian Hart, Head of Junior House

  • We have been really pleased by the way Year 11 have conducted themselves in the exam venues this week. They have been excellent.  Two more days to go (for those not affected by the dreadful bug)!

For those who have been unwell this week, please do not worry, we will get you caught up as soon as we can.  Mrs Woolridge is making a plan for this.

We are looking forward to what will hopefully be a lovely day when they go on their trip to Oxford next Wednesday 26 November. Hopefully this will be a well-earned rest for students after trials. I am delighted that almost every student in the year group will be going.

Mrs Abbie Stephenson, Head of KS4

  • This webinar will be taking place on Wednesday 26 November at 18:30 and will be led by Anthony Hammond (Head of KS3) and Abbie Stephenson (Head of KS4).
They will outline the support provided to Year 9 pupils during their GCSE choices process as well as the key dates.

COLLEGE NEWS THIS WEEK

Year 8 Choristers Workshop

On Tuesday, the Pangbourne Choristers enjoyed a fantastic and inspiring training day. Guided by international opera star Katy Thomson, the pupils spent time exploring their voices in depth, working on posture, projection, breath control, and confident singing. Katy’s expert coaching helped them understand how small adjustments can make a big difference to vocal quality, and the Choristers rose enthusiastically to every challenge. The day was filled with plenty of fun, including lively games (and some wonderfully quirky exercises involving a squid...), all designed to build vocal strength, ensemble awareness, and a sense of musical playfulness. The Choristers are now energised and well-prepared for their upcoming Christmas performances, approaching the festive season with renewed confidence. And, of course, we rounded off the day with some well-deserved cake to celebrate their hard work!

English Speaking Union: Public Speaking Competition Round 1

On Monday afternoon, five students from Years 9 and 10 took part in the first regional round of the English-Speaking Union’s Public Speaking Competition. Each school provided a Chair, Speaker and Questioner, and competitors were mixed into ad-hoc teams with students from other schools, collaborating quickly in a virtual setting.

Before speaking, the teams met to rehearse introductions and prepare questions, testing their spontaneity and communication. The speeches were outstanding, ranging from the value of boredom to reflections on forgiveness. Pangbourne’s speaker, Otto, delivered an engaging interpretation of Hiroshige’s Man on Horseback Crossing a Bridge, earning praise likening his style to Roosevelt’s “fireside chats.”

After over an hour of presentations, Isha and Annie led a thoughtful discussion with Abbey School’s speaker on boredom. We narrowly missed progressing to Round 2 by a single point, but the judges commended the team’s eloquence and confidence. With Ted and Alex also involved, the group now looks ahead to the Rotary Speaks competition in January - ready for more success.

Pangbourne Christmas Market

A huge thank you to the PPA for organising such a wonderful Christmas Market, and to all our stall holders and the Pangbournian Community for coming along. The College was filled with festive spirit and a great buzz throughout the day. We were also delighted to welcome so many prospective parents, whose children were taking part in our Assessment and Activities day, as well as families visiting for sports fixtures. A special thank you to all the parents who have been part of the PPA for their hard work, dedication, and commitment. We’re excited to move forward together into this next stage of our evolution as the Pangbournian Community. Thank you for making the day so special and we look forward to welcoming everyone again to next year’s Christmas Market!

First Time Martial Art Medal for Sophie

On Saturday 15 November, Year 8 pupil Sophie took part in her first ’Tang Sou Dao’ competition, a Korean martial art similar to Shotokan Karate and Taekwondo. Having studied for five years, and currently holding a blue belt in this discipline, Sophie took part in the ‘Forms’ competition in which competitors demonstrate a series of pre-determined punches, kicks and blocks. This is then graded by a panel of judges and Sophie was awarded the Bronze medal for 3rd place in her category. The photo below shows Sophie and her instructor Master Nazim at the competition.

DIVISIONAL UPDATES

This week, we have seen the Year 11 students begin their trial exams; despite many of them being under the weather, and a dramatic drop in temperatures to include a smattering of snow a few days ago - they have valiantly soldiered on. The Divisional Common Rooms have undergone a makeover with some brilliant Christmas decorations which has definitely got us all in the festive spirit! We have also seen the launch of the new hangout space in the West building for all Divisions.

We would like to emphasise that we need confirmation of a child's absence on a daily basis, and not just on the first day of illness, emailed to the relevant Divisional email address and by 08.30 at the latest please. Thank you.

BOARDING UPDATES

The next boarding update will be on 28 November.
