Head’s Weekly Update
Academic rigour
One of the areas we are looking closely at this year is AI and how we can use it both academically and operationally to streamline work and leverage the benefits whilst avoiding the traps. Operationally we are looking at how we can use emerging tech to reduce bureaucracy and enable us to dedicate our time to the main thing - your children. As a self-proclaimed Luddite and very late adopter of tech you will have noticed that, having written my welcome back letter, I ran it through AI to try to moderate my normal glass-half-empty mindset to a more upbeat glass-half-full view of the world. Whilst this is a bit clunky and no doubt turned me into an overly-excited Californian, it is good for us to play around with these things and see where the upsides are. We are also piloting using AI to turn our weekly newsletter into a podcast as well so you can listen to a summary each week. We will get better at this as the year progresses. We are fortunate to have been working with some current parents who are real leaders in this space to guide our work.
Academically we are looking at how we can use some of the emerging tools such as Notebook LM to remove hours from a teacher's workload and enhance the quality of the revision tools we can provide students. Our Heads of Department are currently experimenting with this to ensure that any information we feed Notebook is validated and curated by experts. Once we have got comfortable with this tool we will begin a pilot roll out with the Sixth Form. Notebook LM will, based on the information you feed it, create multiple choice quizzes, mind maps, podcasts and answer direct questions. So it can be a very powerful tool for revision if used correctly. We are also looking at how we can train students to utilise tools such as ChatGPT to help them design revision timetables and manage their work streams. We have a very clear Academic Integrity Policy that details how we can and can’t use AI. Tech is never going to replace a teacher and the central role of human relationships in learning but it can liberate us from bureaucracy and enable us to spend more time thinking with our students.
We are intentionally not rushing into this area and will learn from past mistakes the sector has made; for example when schools all spent tens of thousands of pounds on interactive whiteboards under the promise that they would revolutionise learning. They just became expensive bits of wall to project a PowerPoint onto and have now mostly been consigned to the scrap heap. I have a similar view of virtual reality headsets and other devices that promise much but deliver little of real value to learning.
Adventure
We were delighted to see in our recent Parent survey feedback a deep love for this area of College life. Our adventure programme is designed to give us a real edge and open up the campus in all its glory to our students.
I am going to keep this section brief this week as we will have a longer round-up next week. Needless to say we are delighted with the recent wins for the 1st XV and 2nd XV rugby teams and have our fingers crossed for the Hockey night games vs LWC tonight.
Community
Over the years the College has experimented with different models of community organisation and how we can foster a sense of belonging and shared vision between the various elements of the Pangbourne world. We have decided to go back to an earlier model, with refinements and modifications, to bring a layer of strategy and alignment to our wider community work. This model operates under the banner of the Pangbournian Community Advisory Board (PCAB) and is similar to the model used by many of the great schools we wish to emulate as we seek to regain our place amongst the leading independent schools in the country.
The PCAB has been established to bring together members of our wider Pangbournian Community — alumni, parents, former parents and friends — to strengthen connections across all areas of College life. Its purpose is to foster alignment and collaboration, helping to build enduring relationships that will benefit the College’s long-term future. You will have seen before the half-term break the new Pangbournian Magazine (celebrating all of the great work of the 24/25 academic year) and Pangbournian Connect, our refreshed portal, which are designed to enable even more networking, careers and mentoring opportunities for all members of the community. This is an exciting development for the College and promises to deliver real value for the entire community.
Looking ahead, from September 2026, the College will be introducing Year Group Parent Ambassadors, a new initiative borrowed from Rugby School, to deepen engagement within and between year groups and the College. Parent Ambassadors will all meet termly as a group with the SLT to discuss life at the College and how we can continually improve and enhance our offer. We will be writing out in due course to seek interest from current parents and guardians for these important roles.
Leadership
We will be announcing the next set of Upper Sixth Leadership roles next week. Well done to all students who put themselves forward for consideration.
I would like to thank all the parents who completed the parental survey over half term. It has been really useful to gather everyone’s feedback to help us plan any refinements and next steps in the development plans for the College across a number of different aspects of College life. We had a good response across all year groups and all divisions as well as a huge amount of positive feedback. In particular, that your children feel both safe and happy at the College was over 90%. Similarly, it was refreshing to see that most of the feedback also aligns with what we are already actioning or have on our radar for potential future projects. We will be giving you an update on what actions are being taken in the newsletter in the run up to Christmas.
Best wishes,
Oliver Knight

Following parental feedback, we have made a change to the internet security settings on machines procured through the Easy4U scheme. After the end of the school day, 18.00, less restrictive web filtering is applied. This enables pupils to use streaming services and social media websites for example. They cannot install any apps and their internet use is still monitored. These changes also apply at weekends and off campus and is to reduce the need to have another device for recreational use.
We also introduced Securly Home recently. This service enables you to monitor your children’s internet use on their Easy4U provided device whilst they are at home. You can temporarily prevent access to certain websites without college intervention. The default level of access is restored during school hours and when on campus. This is an opt-in service, and you register for it by completing this google form. You will also need to download the Securly Home app, which is available in both iOS and Android app stores.
Please note that we cannot offer this service to pupils who are not enrolled in the Easy4U scheme.
Easy4U Scheme Terms and Conditions
The Easy4U scheme provides comprehensive cover in the event of software and hardware faults for the duration of the contract term. It also provides cover if the device is accidentally damaged or stolen However, this element is subject to an excess of £50.00 per incident, per device and applies to both rented and purchased items.

Here’s how you can help:
Please choose new items if possible; high-quality second-hand goods are also accepted.
Aim for items that suit ages 13–16: something fun, practical or creative.

Every gift counts. Together, we can spread a little extra joy this Christmas!
Thank you for your generosity and kindness.

COLLEGE NEWS THIS WEEK
Art Trip to Kew Gardens
On Tuesday 4 November the art department took all of Year 9 to Kew Gardens for the day to support their current Natural Forms Observation Project. Students spent the day exploring different environments, including the famous Palm House and the Princess of Wales Conservatory. They were surrounded by native wildlife as well as more exotic plant life. The time was well spent making creative quick sketches and photography to support their individual projects back in the classroom.
Biology Field Trip to Rushall Farm
This week, both the lower and upper sixth form biology students went to Rushall Farm near Bradfield to carry out some river studies as part of their environmental work. Students donned waders to measure river depth and flow rate, along with some chemical analysis to look at pH, nitrate content and hardness. They then spent time looking for invertebrate animals that act as indicators of water cleanliness and were also lucky enough to find a number of fish species and the invasive american crayfish.
Sports Networking Event
Last night our Sixth Form students had a fantastic opportunity to connect with ten incredible delegates from across the Pangbournian community at our Sports Networking & Careers Evening. Throughout the evening, students spoke with professionals from every corner of the sporting world — from motorsport and horse racing to rugby, football, and beyond — exploring a wide range of careers in media, analytics, performance, and marketing. They left inspired and equipped with valuable insider knowledge to help shape their future career paths. A huge thank you to all the delegates who so generously gave their time and insights.
If you’d like to get involved in future events, keep an eye on the Parent Newsletter and our social channels for upcoming opportunities!
A Level English Trip to watch Othello
On Thursday we took A Level English students to see the new production of Shakespeare's Othello at London's Haymarket Theatre. The production boasted an impressive cast, including David Harewood in the role of Othello, Toby Jones as Lago, and Caitlin Fitzgerald as Desdemona. For the Lower Sixth, it was an exciting opportunity to experience the play in person for the first time, and the intensity of the acting and direction helped to give them a strong first impression. For our Upper Sixth, who had seen last year's Othello in Stratford upon Avon, it was an interesting opportunity to compare and contrast the directorial decisions of the two productions, prompting much lively debate as to their relative merits. It was a tremendously enjoyable day out for all and will no doubt inspire the students in their future study of the play.
Boarders Halloween Party
On Wednesday evening St George welcomed boarders from all houses to celebrate Halloween. We started off with a sweet treasure hunt and made some chocolate and candy apples. Catering then put on a brilliant Halloween spread and decorated the Mess Hall. After supper, boarders were invited back to St George for a disco with pizza followed by a movie with popcorn.
SPORT
Finley’s Success at the British Schools’ Rifle Championships
Well done to Finley who took part in the British Shooting Schools’ rifle championships over half term. He received top male shooter in the heats and got to the final where he came sixth overall.
Eventers Challenge National Qualifiers
The equestrian team enjoyed a successful competition at Rectory Farn on 24 October for the Eventers Challenge National Qualifiers. Our team of Sophie, Connie, Annabelle and Izzy took the win in the Intermediate (90cm-95cm) Qualifier to secure Pangbourne a place at the Championships at Hickstead in May 2026. Sophie impressively also took the win individually. In the Open Class (1m-1.05m) both Sophie and Connie put strong performances in to place 3rd and 4th individually, again, earning them a place at the Championships next year.
LWC Super 7s Tournament
Our 2nd XI showed great determination and teamwork during the super 7s tournament on Wednesday. Well done to all the girls that took part!
1st XV make it to the next round of the National Bowl
A huge congratulations to our 1st XV on a highly competitive performance against Claires Court School. In a nail-biting finish, just two points separated the sides with Pangbourne securing the win with a score of 17-15 and progressing to the next round of the National Bowl! Great teamwork and determination shown throughout, well done boys!
DIVISIONAL UPDATES
Students have returned looking well-rested and full of energy after the break, with many sharing stories of exciting travels — from working in rhino sanctuaries to exploring Paris and visiting family. Back on campus, we’re straight into the swing of College life with sports fixtures already underway, including a big match against Lord Wandsworth College this evening. Our students are also preparing thoughtfully for the Remembrance Parade on Sunday, a significant event in our College calendar.
BOARDING UPDATES
This week marked the first week of Adelaide. The boys have spent the week settling into the House, getting used to the new facilities and making the space their own. On Tuesday, the boys - along with visitors from PJ - spent the evening watching the Champions League match between Liverpool and Real Madrid. Amongst the boys, there were fans of both teams which made for a good atmosphere in the common room. On Wednesday, the boys watched the 1st XV rugby team play their cup match (in which members of the House, Jude R and Harry B, were competing) followed by visiting St George in the evening for the Halloween Party. On Friday, we will be out supporting the girl's evening hockey fixture against Lord Wandsworth College and on Sunday afternoon there is a trip to Reading. If you would like to contact the team at Adelaide, please use the following email address: adelaide@pangbourne.com
