All Pupils & Parents: Years 7- Upper Sixth

  • Since the College has fallen under the attendance policies of the maintained sector, we are required to have a clearer idea of where the pupils are and, particularly, the circumstances when they leave site. The main changes are that, from half term onwards, pupils will not be allowed to sign out without explicit parental agreement and they should sign in and out with the PA to Senior Staff on the ground floor of study block. To clarify the processes:

    • If a pupil needs to miss College for a planned reason, a request for leave form should be completed on the College portal. This applies to whole days, late arrival and early departure.

    • If a pupil is going to be absent, late or collected early for an unplanned reason (e.g. illness or a transport issue) then you should email the relevant Divisional email address as soon as possible.

    • If a pupil arrives late for any reason, they should sign in with the PA to Senior Staff (ground floor study block). They cannot sign in at any other location.

    • If a pupil is signing out, they must do so with the PA to Senior Staff. Records will be checked and the pupil will only be allowed to sign out if we have a record of parental consent. If there is no record then we will need to seek consent by phone. When permission is confirmed, the pupil will wait for collection in Reception.

    • If you consent to an unaccompanied departure (i.e. the pupil is not being collected from College by a parent) then this needs to be explicit.

    • For Sixth form students, we still need parental permission to allow an early sign out. Pupils with a driving permit will be allowed access to their car keys once permission is confirmed.

    • If a pupil needs to be collected because they are unwell, you will be contacted by the Health Centre.

Mr Mark Seccombe, Senior Deputy Head Academic

  • We are delighted to announce the first two concerts in our new Pangbourne Arts series, both taking place in the beautiful Falkland Islands Memorial Chapel. These events promise inspiring live music and we warmly encourage you to come along and support them.

The first concert takes place on Monday 2 March 2026 at 19:30 and is a lecture recital entitled The landscape of exile. This thought-provoking evening explores the experiences of composers who were forced to flee risk and persecution, and how exile shaped their music and creative lives. Through live performance and commentary, the recital brings together music, history, and personal stories in a way that is both moving and illuminating. The performers are Katy Thomson (soprano), Rustam Khanmurzin (piano), and Katy Hamilton (musicologist), whose combined expertise will offer the audience a rich and engaging introduction to the repertoire and its wider context.

The second concert, on Monday 11 May 2026 at 19:30, welcomes the acclaimed all-female vocal ensemble Papagena with their programme Tomorrow is today, drawn from their fourth album of the same name. The concert explores themes of beauty, love, and the passing of time, with music ranging from early composers such as Hildegard of Bingen and Claudio Monteverdi to modern and contemporary figures including Kate Bush, Caroline Shaw, and James MacMillan.

Tickets are now available to purchase online (reserved seating) and details can be found by visiting the music pages of the College website (www.pangbourne.com/music). Whilst these are public concerts, Pangbourne pupils and families can get half price tickets using the code PANGBOURNE50 at checkout. We hope many members of the Pangbourne community will be able to join us to help make these inaugural concerts a great success.

Mr Don Gillthorpe, Director of Music

  • The Art Department are looking for expressions of interest in a trip for Art, Photography or BTEC Art and Design to Venice in February next year.

If your son/daughter is a Year 10, 11 or Lower Sixth student and studying Art we would like to know if you are interested in joining us.

This would be an exciting opportunity for pupils to visit an iconic UNESCO world heritage site, as well as being a valuable cultural experience with the opportunity to create artwork whilst on the trip.

Currently this is just a feasibility study and costs and final itinerary will be decided once we know numbers. The expected dates fall during February Half Term: 10 - 15 February 2027.

Please complete this google form to express your interest.

Mr Tom Poynter, Assistant Head Co-Curricular

  • Dates TBC: Friday 11th/Saturday 12th December - Thursday 17th/Friday 18th December 2026

This year we are returning to Salzburger Sportwelt, Austria for our next ski trip.

This has proven to be a popular location both with students and staff due to the excellent in country service, ski terrain variety, evening activity options and snow quality - hence our return. To remind you (or introduce you to), the Salzburger Sportwelt ranges from the town of Radstadt to the village of Filzmoos situated at an altitude of 1,075m at the foot of the Dachstein. In winter the resorts (Flachau, Wagrain-Kleinarl, St.Johann, Radstadt, Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Bischofshofen and Filzmoos) make up the centrepiece of Austria's largest ski area - the Ski Amadé. We will be staying in a hotel in one of the named resorts which has a short bus ride or walk to skiing and the main telecabine.

If your child is interested in attending please fill out this google form here. Places tend to fill up very fast and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Mr Paul Radford, Head of Port Jackson

  • If you are outside the UK over half term and need to access any college system, then you need to let IT know. Send an email to martin.palfrey@pangbourne.com with:

    • The dates you are outside the UK.

    • All the countries you will be visiting. For example, France, or Germany and Holland.

IT will make an exception for you to allow you to access our systems.

Mr Martin Palfrey, Network, Systems and Data Manager

  • We have a lot of fixtures in the week following half term. If there are planned absences, please can these be sent through today (Friday 13 February) via the absence request form in My School Portal (From the menu, select My Children and then Pupil Absence from School Request) and also an email to Mr Joe Mills, Director of Sport (joe.mills@pangbourne.com). Up to date teams sheets and fixture details are always available here.

  • Our first Saturday College Parade will take place on 7 March 2026. Please see the document here for more information including timings for the day.

  • On Thursday 12 March at 19:00 in chapel, we welcome James Cary's stand-up show, God, the Bible and Everything. James has been one of Britain's leading comedy writers for the last 20 years, writing for Miranda Hart, My Family and Citizen Khan, his own series, Bluestone 42, as well as other series and episodes on BBC TV and Radio 4. We have previously hosted his plays, A Monk's Tale and The God Particle. According to James, his new show "explains the whole Bible, in one hour, with jokes, a big screen and a few props. And maybe even a song."

The event is open to students and staff, as well as parents and the wider community. Tickets will be £10 a head for parents and will go on sale after half term. Please put this in your diary, a booking link will follow in the newsletter on 27 February.

The Reverend Neil Jeffers, College Chaplain

  • The much anticipated Pangbournian Community Quiz is back on 20 March at 19:30 in Mess Hall.

With Quizmaster Don Gilthorpe at the helm, it promises to be a fantastic night in aid of two great causes: Transforming Futures, the College's programme providing life-changing Sixth Form bursaries for young people who might not otherwise benefit from a Pangbourne education, and the College's partnership with the Nabugabo Community Learning Centre in Uganda.

    Book your tickets here.

Mrs Lucinda Grafton, Director of Development

  • We would like to provide an update regarding bus services on the last day of Lent Term, Friday 27 March 2026.

Due to the earlier finish of 16:35 on the final day of term and historically low pupil numbers using the evening bus services, our usual evening bus routes will not be operating on this date.

We will however continue to run the station minibus service that evening for pupils travelling via train. If you require your child to travel home by bus on the evening of 27 March, please let us know in advance by contacting bursaryadmin@pangbourne.com

Should there be demand, we will arrange a bus (or buses) to accommodate those pupils. We kindly ask that parents contact us by 20 March to allow us to plan accordingly.

  • There will be a golf day for parents, pupils and staff on Friday 29 May at The Springs Golf Club. The day includes a light breakfast, 18 holes, and lunch with presentation and prizes for £65 per head. Proceeds will go to Transforming Futures. You will need to enter as a pair (a great opportunity for parent/child partnerships) and we have tee times booked for 20 pairs (40 players). You can book your place via this link .

    Final few spaces remaining!

If you would be interested in sponsoring elements of the day for charity, please get in touch with neil.jeffers@pangbourne.com

  • Coming up straight after the half term break is the Dunbar Inter-Watch Music evening. This is being organised and co-ordinated by the Music Department, and is scheduled on Thursday 26 February.

It will take place in the Chapel, and there will be plenty of seats available, so no need to sign up for tickets - just come along on the night. The format will be that each Watch will present a group song involving the whole Watch, and there will be a solo vocal performance and a solo instrumental performance for each Watch as well. Since all the children are involved, we will arrange dinner for all Dunbar pupils, and you may meet them outside the Chapel beforehand, or afterwards if you are unable to attend. We aim to start at around 19:00, and the evening should last around an hour.

Dr Ian Hart, Head of Junior House

  • To celebrate World Book Day, pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 are invited to take part in a dress-up day on Thursday 5 March.

    Students may come dressed as:

    • a book character (e.g. Harry Potter, Matilda, Katniss Everdeen), or

    • a book genre (e.g. fantasy, mystery, science fiction or horror).

Costumes do not need to be elaborate – simple, low-cost ideas using everyday clothing are absolutely fine. Please ensure that all outfits are appropriate for a school setting and suitable for a normal school day.

We’re looking forward to seeing students celebrate their love of reading and creativity!

Mrs Vanessa Saunders, Head of Digital Resources/ Librarian

Year 7 - 8 (Dunbar)

  • Initial entries have been made for this summer's exams. You can view your child's entries through the College portal here. They can be found within the 'My Child' section by clicking on 'Exam Timetable'. Please note that the paper name is how it is referred to by the exam board and some are more obvious than others! If your child is in any doubt about the nature of the paper, they should ask the relevant teacher. The overview of all the summer term examinations, including those which are scheduled in advance such as the Art and Photography exams and MFL oral exams can be found within the 'Academic - Exams' section of the College Documents. A link to this overview is also at the top of the individual entries page. Please do not worry if there are any clashes, it is a common occurrence and the exams team will be in contact to let you know how the clash will be resolved.

Mr Mark Seccombe, Senior Deputy Head Academic

  • Revision timetables are written, revision 'best bets' established, flashcards purchased....Trials 2 are almost upon us! Students will be straight into their Trials on the Monday after half term. Any support you can give at home with revision over half term would be brilliant. Please remember the trifecta of flashcards, quizzing and past papers! Best of luck to you and your child!

Mrs Abbie Stephenson, Head of KS4

  • The assessment week at the start of this term seems like an awfully long time ago now, but half term would be a great time to consolidate any gaps in knowledge which were established at this point. Year 10 have had a really busy half term with this, alongside loads of sport, drama (well done to the many Year 10s involved in the production), CCF and a whole range of other activities. They now need a good rest!

Mrs Abbie Stephenson, Head of KS4

  • This week Year 9s have been receiving feedback for their assessment week. There will of course be successes but also areas to focus on. As we approach the final options deadline on 13 March, I cannot emphasise enough the importance of continued perseverance in all subjects, including those that pupils will discontinue from Year 10. This will support pupils in managing the workload in Years 10 and Year 11. The Year 9s will do a final set of examinations in June, which will take place in a more formal setting in the Sports Hall. The experience last week will be a key stepping stone towards this. I would also like to remind parents of the upcoming Parents’ and Guardians’ meeting on Wednesday 4 March (second week after half term).

Mr Anthony Hammond, Head of KS3

  • In assembly on Monday, Mr Poynter fired the starting gun on an exciting new flagship event: the Three Rivers Challenge. Taking place during the penultimate week of June, this annual inter-divisional adventure race will see an elite group of Sixth Form students push their limits across three days, three disciplines and 60 kilometres. Designed to test strength, teamwork, resilience and leadership, the Challenge promises to be a highlight of the College’s adventure calendar.

Students were invited to form Divisional teams under the leadership of their CCCs with the aim of competing in an extreme triathlon inspired by our local rivers: a 16.5 km run along the River Kennet, a 26.5 km yomp beside the River Pang, and a 17 km canoe race on the River Thames supported by Adventure Dolphin.

We look forward to updating you as the teams take shape and the preparation progresses.

Mr Tom Poynter, Assistant Head Co-Curricular

  • With a focus on helping our students prepare for life beyond Pangbourne, our new enrichment activities have got off to a strong start this term with the introduction of the Emergency First Aid at Work course for Lower Sixth students. The course has proved extremely popular and was oversubscribed, with 12 students successfully enrolled. Due to high demand, we aim to run additional courses in the Summer Term and again in the Michaelmas Term.

After half term, Self-Defence classes will begin, also for the Lower Sixth. Delivered by a qualified Martial Arts Master, these sessions will support students in developing greater awareness, confidence, and personal safety skills.

Mr Tom Poynter, Assistant Head Co-Curricular

COLLEGE NEWS THIS WEEK

Flowers for Friends

The Chiefs of Illawarra, Erika and Kam, did a fantastic job running the Flowers for Friends charity initiative which is all about spreading kindness and appreciation across our community. Students and staff were able to purchase a flower and a card for £1 and they were able to write a heartfelt message to anyone in the community. It was very successful with almost 400 flowers purchased. All proceeds went to Transforming Futures and the Pangbourne Community Fund.

College Production of The Addams Family: Schools Edition

All of the staff and pupils involved in the College production have worked extremely hard this half term to bring the audience three captivating performances of The Addams Family. Throughout the lead up of the College Production, all pupils have shown much determination and hard work, even coming in on Sundays for extra rehearsals. Well done to everyone who took part in this production as it truly is such a team effort and thank you to everyone who came to support any of the three shows!

Ms Rebecca Atack, Head of Drama

Boys’ 1st XI Football Fixture Vs St Benedict’s

So far this season, the team has put out strong performances without securing the result and finally last Saturday, this came to fruition with a superb display leading to a 3-0 victory over St Benedict’s. After a strong start, a fantastic offensive transition led to our opening goal from the edge of the box. We added a second and third goal before the break. A solid defensive display in the second half, resulted in our first clean sheet and first victory of the season. As we move towards the second half of this season, we hope this will act as the platform for many more successful results. Well done to everyone involved.

Mr James Purdue, Head of Football

Boys’ 2nd XI Football Vs St Benedict’s

An incredibly well matched and close game with good football being played from both sides from the outset. A 2:1 loss did not reflect how we played overall and I think a draw would have been a much fairer representation of how we played and what we deserved.

We have settled back into a 4:4:2 formation, we are strong, confident and aware of what is going on at the back. The midfield on the whole worked well winning the ball but we need to show a little more confidence in the players who are supporting us in tight areas. Our best options for moving the ball into more beneficial areas is often overlooked in favour of trying to beat an opponent with the ball. Up front we have an abundance of pace and strength and as a team we need to utilise this more.

I am absolutely confident that when we put together all aspects of our game we will win and win big.

Mr Andy Sumner, Football Coach

Boys’ U18D Football Vs St Benedict’s

In a remarkably close and competitive encounter, the U18D team narrowly missed out on a result against St Benedict’s, falling 1-0 in a game that truly could have gone either way. From the opening whistle, both sides displayed high intensity, trading scoring opportunities in a tactical battle that saw the mighty 4ths demonstrate just how much they have evolved as a unit. The team looked significantly more composed than in previous outings, maintaining excellent discipline within the Pangbourne 4-2-3-1 formation. This structural improvement allowed for a more balanced transition between defence and attack, ensuring the game remained a tight contest until the very end. While the scoreboard favoured St Benedict’s at 1-0, the performance was a testament to the team's growth, grit and spirit.

Mr Joe Mills, Director of Sport

Girls’ 1st XI Football Vs St Mary’s Ascot

The 1st XI showed exactly what they are made of. Facing a formidable St Mary’s Ascot side in tough, muddy conditions was never going to be a free flowing Football game.

The first half was a "cagey" affair. St Mary’s brought a significant physical presence to the pitch, using their size and strength to disrupt our rhythm. While we held onto possession, the girls struggled to truly impose their technical superiority, often getting caught in physical battles in the midfield rather than finding the space they needed. We headed into the break at 0-0, knowing we had another gear to find.

During the half-time talk, the message was clear: stop playing their game and start playing ours. We needed to move the ball quicker, avoid the contact and trust our fitness to wear them down.

The response was immediate. The girls emerged for the second half with renewed intensity, breaking the deadlock early on through some clinical finishing. Laurel J was the standout offensive threat, demonstrating superb composure to find the back of the net twice. Her ability to navigate a crowded box was the difference-maker we desperately needed.

As the pressure mounted, we earned a well-deserved penalty. Harriet P stepped up and dispatched a "textbook" strike to make it 3-0, effectively killing off any hopes of a St Mary's comeback.

While the scoreline looks comfortable, this was a hard-fought victory. I was particularly impressed by the grit shown in the defensive line to keep a clean sheet against such physical opponents. Faith M and Millie B where a key part in responding to the opposition physicality. It was a professional, mature performance that proved we can win ugly when the conditions demand it.

Mr Frankie Rogan, Football Coach

Girls’ 2nd XI Football Vs St Mary’s Ascot

What a first game for the 2nd XI! Sadly our fixtures this term have been cancelled by our competition so our girls were ready to get out and play. Our girls were super excited as they turned up and got ready on the pitch. The first half was a rocky start going 0-3 down but even so, the girls had the biggest smiles on their faces and were not giving up. After our team talk, the aim was to get at least one goal. The girls went back onto the pitch with a fierce attitude, ready to get those goals.

In around 10 minutes we had our first goal and then a few minutes later we had our second. The girls spirits were as high as ever and in search of that third goal. The girls had a great afternoon and they cannot wait for their next game - Well done!

Dr Ian Hart, Football Coach

U18 Rugby 7s

The U18 Rugby 7s team delivered a resilient performance at the Bristol Grammar School 7s, starting with a thrilling comeback against the Bristol Schools Group. Despite falling two tries behind early on to the Bears-supported side, Pangbourne ignited in the second half with relentless attacking pressure, scoring three unanswered tries to snatch a physical opening victory.

The momentum faced a stern test in the second fixture against a powerful Millfield side. Pangbourne struggled to secure possession under Millfield's intense kick-off pressure, making it difficult to find a rhythm. However, when the team did manage to get hands on the ball, they looked dangerous and created several clear scoring opportunities despite the eventual loss.

The final group game against Mount Kelly was the most contested battle of the day, characterised by a see-saw exchange of possession. The deadlock was finally broken by Max W, whose massive, game-stopping hit forced a crucial turnover and led to a Pangbourne try. This defensive grit allowed the team to edge out their Devon rivals and secure a win.

Finishing second in the group, Pangbourne progressed to the Plate semi-final against Blundell’s. While the squad made a promising start with several sharp line breaks, Blundell’s eventually took control through sustained possession and clinical ball movement. They successfully manipulated the defence to score several tries, ending a hard-fought tournament for the Pangbourne side.

Mr Ben Sainsbury, Director of Rugby and Mr Michael Cooke, Rugby Coach

Boys’ U13A Rugby Vs Shiplake

The Pangbourne U13As were well matched in their fixture against Shiplake on Wednesday. A strong first half from the visitors meant a comfortable lead and a tired Pangbourne side feeling defeated. Our boys showed great resilience and fought hard to get some tries of their own in the second half, coming back to level it with a few minutes to go. A brilliant run by Cristian N-W down the left hand touchline in the last play of the game saw him beat multiple defenders to score in the corner and there were great celebrations from the team. A well deserved win as they dug deep as a collective.

Mr Michael Cooke, Rugby Coach

Pangbourne Vs The Oratory J14 and J15 Rowing Match

On Saturday 7 February Pangbourne hosted The Oratory's Year 9 and 10 boys and girls for a match over 1000m and 250m on the Concept2 ergometers. This was followed by a combined team relay over 6000m. The Oratory brought some strong individuals who pushed the young Pangbourne rowers hard. The team event was won by Pangbourne who showed strength in depth. The J14 competition was of a particularly high standard. Ben F (J14) was our fastest male athlete and Bunny E was the fastest girl over 1000m. In the 250m sprint Alice C (JW14) did exceptionally well, coming second overall beating many JW15 athletes. The vast majority of Pangbourne athletes scored personal bests in both the 1000m and the 250m. This is a testament to the high quality training the squads have been undertaking this term. The relay competition was competed for in teams of six made up from both The Oratory and Pangbourne. This saw an incredibly close race over 6000m. Team 'Athens' came out winners by 0.6 of a second over team 'Paris' with a fantastic sprint finish by George G. George was supported in team 'Athens' by Chris M and Oliver C. A great morning of training and racing.

Mr Ed Green, Director of Rowing

BOARDING UPDATES

Adelaide

It has been a busy couple of weeks in Adelaide.

Last week, the whole House gathered in the common room with takeaway pizzas to watch the opening game of the Six Nations Rugby. There was added anticipation as the game also saw the start of the House fantasy rugby league. Well done to Tom H and Ted M who sit top of the table after week one.

Last Thursday also saw the opening of a House tuck-shop, stocked with drinks and snacks for evening consumption. It is fair to say that it has been well used in its first week of existence!

This week, many of the boys have taken the opportunity to go and watch the College production of The Addams Family on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Our very own Luca S-T has been involved with the production-side of the play, specifically overseeing the lighting.

Several boys and staff also went to support Leo R as he played piano in the evening music recital. We have been very lucky to hear snippets of practice on our House piano but it was wonderful to hear the final piece in all its glory.

No doubt the boys have earnt a rest over the half term, and I sincerely hope that all students and parents have a restful break.

Mr Olly Metcalfe, Head of Adelaide

Port Jackson

Over the past two weeks at Port Jackson, it has been fantastic to see the continued energy, camaraderie and positive spirit among the boys. As the half term break approaches, the boys remain in good spirits, though they are certainly ready for a well-deserved rest after a busy and productive start to the term.

A major highlight has been the launch of the Six Nations Rugby Fantasy League, which has well and truly taken off within the house. Many of the boys eagerly created their teams and have enthusiastically taken part in the competition. With Round 1 now complete, there have already been clear winners and losers!

The 1st and 2nd place finishers were rewarded in style, earning the coveted Thursday night feast – a prize that was thoroughly enjoyed and celebrated. Meanwhile, those at the bottom of the table had to battle it out in a highly entertaining (and completely silent!) dance-off to determine who would finish last. The creativity and commitment on display certainly provided plenty of laughs for everyone involved.

Rounds 2 and 3 are over half term, with results to be judged and announced once we return. There is plenty still to play for, and competition remains fierce!

Overall, it has been a positive and lively fortnight in Port Jackson. The boys should be proud of their efforts and the way they continue to support one another – and now, a well-earned break awaits.

St George

This week St George have enjoyed a karaoke and dance night, a board games night, and a Valentines party. The Valentine’s party included a classic rom-com movie and cheesy love song karaoke whilst a variety of snacks were on offer. We were so proud of all the students who took part in the College Production of The Addams Family this week; almost all of our boarders showed up to support their peers on one of the three performance nights. We wish everybody a relaxing and restful half term and look forward to welcoming everybody back!
