Friday 9 January 2026
Welcome back to the start of the Lent Term. As this is the first newsletter of the term I will deviate from the usual structure and outline the focus for the term ahead.
It was with a heavy heart that we had to postpone our Carol Service at the end of the Michaelmas Term but I am delighted we are holding our Epiphany Carols tonight, which will help do justice to the work the Choir and music team have put in alongside starting the term as we mean to go on.
Over the holiday I listened to Rutger Bregman’s 2025 Reith Lectures, titled "Moral Revolution”. It was a fascinating and provocative listen and I would implore all parents to listen to them. Bregman provides a sharp critique of modern society and offers up a challenge to the independent school sector. The theme that most resonated with me and what we are trying to achieve at Pangbourne was the concept of “Moral Ambition”. The idea that we should celebrate and amplify our students who use their great education to solve "sizable, solvable, and neglected" problems, such as climate technology, pandemic prevention or extreme poverty. If we are serious about turning out young men and women who are a force for good, who want to not only engage with but shape the national discourse, then we can lean into the concept and have new metrics for defining success.
It is right that at Pangbourne we focus on the individual and their ability to flourish, but we know for individuals to flourish and be truly happy they need to be serving something greater than the individual.
This idea linked into the focus of my first assembly back with the students. I talked to them about habits and how building strong habits, or process goals, is more likely to lead to securing longer-term performance goals. I gave the students 4 simple tools to build good habits, based on what the evidence base currently suggests:
Focus on consistency, not intensity = 15 mins a day is better than a 2 hour block once a week.
Anchor new habits to existing routines = do vocab flashcards after brushing your teeth.
Celebrate the process, not just the result = Have a go at every question on a paper. Even if you are unsure.
Keep habits visible = have a checklist on the wall of your room. Visibility makes habits harder to forget.
Hopefully, through building strong habits, we can secure strong achievement and then use that currency to solve some of the biggest issues facing society. That is the true measure of a Pangbourne education.
Finally, I am delighted that the following new members of staff have joined Pangbourne this term and I am sure you will extend a warm welcome to them:
Joe Mills - Director of Sport
Sarah Kiernan Webb - Head of English
Simon Nicolls - Bandmaster and Music Operations Manager
Sarah Barozzi - Devitt Reception Administrator (14:00-17:30)
Best wishes,
Oliver Knight

The College calendar shows the schedule for our busy programme of fixtures and regattas throughout the term. It will indicate the teams playing, the opposition, and whether fixtures are home or away. Alongside this, there may also be training sessions for teams where there is no fixture or regatta. This will be communicated by the coaches in the week prior to the Saturday.
If a student is selected for a team but is unavailable, permission must be sought from the Director of Sport no later than the preceding Wednesday.
Students who are not selected for a team and have not been advised of training are not required to attend College on a Saturday.
If a fixture is cancelled, the coaches will communicate this to the team and may offer training instead.

The festive season has passed, leaving behind a trail of wrapping paper, leftover treats, and for many teenagers, exciting new gadgets. While these devices can be fantastic for learning and connection, the post-Christmas period presents a unique opportunity to help your child find a healthier balance with their digital world. A "digital detox" isn't about deprivation; it's about intentional disconnection to foster real-world connections, creativity, and mental well-being.
Why a Digital Detox?
After the intense digital engagement that often comes with new tech and holiday downtime, a structured break can be incredibly beneficial. It allows young minds to reset, reduces the pressure of constant notifications, and encourages engagement with activities beyond screens. Think of it as hitting the refresh button for their brains!
Embrace "Ghost Mode"
One effective strategy is to introduce the concept of "Ghost Mode." This isn't about being anti-social, but rather about consciously choosing periods where devices are put away, notifications are silenced, and they're fully present in their immediate environment. It could be for family meals, during homework, when spending time with friends in person, or even for an hour before bedtime. Encourage them to see it as a superpower – the ability to disappear from the digital noise and reappear fully engaged in the real world. This helps them regain control over their attention, rather than being constantly pulled by their devices.
Making the Detox Happen - some suggestions:
Lead by Example: Your own digital habits are powerful. If you're constantly on your phone, it's harder to encourage your child to unplug.
Set Clear Boundaries: Discuss and agree on device-free zones (e.g., dining table, bedrooms after a certain time) and device-free times.
Offer Engaging Alternatives: Plan family activities, encourage hobbies, suggest reading, or get outdoors. The goal isn't just to remove the digital, but to replace it with something enriching.
Start Small: A full-day detox might be too much initially. Begin with a few hours, or one device-free evening a week, and gradually extend the periods.
Open Communication: Talk to your child about why you're suggesting this. Focus on the benefits for their well-being, sleep, and concentration, rather than making it feel like a punishment.
New Devices? Check Your Privacy Settings!
With new phones, tablets, or gaming consoles often received over Christmas, it's crucial to take a moment to review and adjust privacy settings. Sit down with your child and go through the settings together. Ensure that location services are restricted, app permissions are set appropriately, and social media privacy settings are robust. Discuss the importance of strong passwords and being mindful of what they share online. This proactive step helps to safeguard their personal information and ensures a safer digital experience as they start using their new tech.

We would like to remind parents to make sure their child has the correct uniform, and that they are in school as close to 08:00 as possible, registration closes at 08:20 but notices are given at 08:15.
When a child is going to be absent from school, it is important for the parent to alert the child’s Division and boarding house where applicable. It is very important that parents complete absence requests for all known and planned absences in advance on the Parent Portal.

The 1st XV Rugby team are playing Newbury RFC on Friday 16 January at 19:00. The fixture will be taking place at Newbury RFC’s home ground and the address is Newbury RFC, Monks Lane, Newbury RG14 7RW.
The fixture taking place at Newbury means that there will be access to the club bar for spectators. The College would like to stress this should only be used by parents and at no point should any students be drinking alcohol. We have a very clear policy that no current Pangbourne student, irrespective of their age, can drink alcohol or be under the influence of alcohol whilst on campus or representing Pangbourne College. The club has its own clear alcohol policy stressing that anyone who looks under 18 years old will be asked to provide identification to prove their age and drinks may only be purchased one at a time (not large group orders). A breach of this could see them lose their licence.
The club has also asked us to politely remind our players and spectators that they have a strict ‘no dogs allowed’ policy.

Every year, the Chaplain offers Confirmation classes in the Lent Term, to prepare for Confirmation in the Summer Term. Please do get in touch with Mr Jeffers on neil.jeffers@pangbourne.com if your child would be interested. Classes will probably be on Monday lunchtime this year, starting on 19 January, but we aim to accommodate anyone who is interested. It is open to any year group. Attending the classes does not commit you to getting confirmed, it is just an opportunity to think and ask questions.

It’s been lovely to welcome the students back. On the whole they are looking rested and refreshed! It is clear that many of them have worked hard on their prep over the holidays which I hope is helping them to feel relaxed and well-prepared for their tests which start next week. Please see the assessment timetable here and assessment information here. During these tests all students will be off their usual timetable. When they are not writing a test they will be able to revise in the exam room. Sport, activities, parade practice all carry on as usual.
Please see the key dates for Year 10 this term here.
The Head spoke about the importance of building good habits in his start of term assembly on Tuesday. This is something we shall be considering in tutor time over the coming weeks, alongside considering how these habits can support the process of dual goal setting (process and performance goals). They will also have a first foray into the Unifrog platform (a brilliant resource which provides a wealth of information on universities, careers and future pathways) which will encourage them to start to consider their own possible careers and future pathways.
As ever, please do contact your child's tutor with any questions you may have as the first port of call.
Thank you so much,
Mrs Abbie Stephenson, Head of KS4

For our field trip on Friday 16 January, please be at the minibuses ready to depart at 08:30.
A few other things to note:
Please wear waterproof / windproof clothing - we will be out all day on the coast. The weather will be cold but dry but there is often significant sea spray. Hats, gloves, big coats are all recommended. Waterproof layers, such as a waterproof coat over a puffer jacket is advisable.
Please wear wellies or walking/CCF boots. There is lots of mud and your nice trainers will be ruined.
We are providing school packed lunches but there is a café stop too. Bring some pocket money if you wish to buy extra food.
Please bring a PEN! This is a working study day, we will be writing and recording data.
Bring a water bottle and any snacks or supplies that you need!
Bring your phones for photos and videos.
We aim to be back at the College for around 17:00 on Friday, traffic permitting.

Next week, the Lower Sixth will be off timetable as they take their assessments. There is no formal study leave for these assessments so students are expected in College as normal. Sport and activities will be on in the afternoon and students are expected to attend unless they are in an assessment (some of the longer ones run into the co-curricular activities slightly).
When not in an assessment, students should be revising in the Sixth Form Centre, Library or revision classroom. The schedule for the assessments and revision guidance can be found here. Results will be formally released on Monday 26 January and can be discussed at the parents' meeting on Friday 13 February.

COLLEGE NEWS THIS WEEK
Pangbourne Ski Trip to Austria
61 students and 8 staff members returned to Flachau, Austria, for our exciting annual ski trip. Five days of stunning alpine scenery, delicious food, and fresh mountain air proved to be a brilliant way to end the term. Every student made fantastic progress, and we would like to thank the North47 team for their excellent tuition. By the end of the week, our beginners were confidently skiing red runs, while our advanced skiers took on the infamous 12 Peak Challenge, with one team skiing 42km in a single day to complete it!
In the evenings, students enjoyed visiting the Salzburg Christmas Market, racing down the ‘Lucky Flitzer’ toboggan, and relaxing with a chilled night at the pool hall. A highlights video of the trip will be released soon, and plenty of photos and videos are already available on Instagram at @pangcollskitrips.
Many thanks to Mr. Radford and his staff team for making the trip such a memorable success and keep your eyes peeled for details on how to sign up for next year's trip.
First Day of Term Snow Day
The first day of term was made extra special by a beautiful flurry of snow that coated the whole campus. Some of our pupils took this opportunity to get outside and make the best snowman they possibly could.
SPORT
Welcome to our new Director of Sport, Joe Mills
We are delighted to announce that Mr Mills has now joined us as our new Director of Sport. He joins us from Rugby School Thailand where he is the Head of Academic PE. Mr Mills holds over a decade of leadership experience across high performing UK and International Schools and brings a wealth of expertise in developing a curriculum and sports programme to inspire participation, promote physical activity and drive performance. Mr Mills will be central to executing our vision and ensuring every student participates in competitive sport and develops a lifelong passion for sport and exercise.
DIVISIONAL UPDATES
It has been good to welcome everyone back this week, students have returned full of stories, chatting about holidays spent skiing, celebrating, New Year’s parties, and soaking up the sun in warmer climates. The snow on Tuesday certainly added to the back to school excitement! the Divisions ended the Michaelmas term with lots of friendly and competitive competitions from Divisional sports competitions (hockey and rugby) and the Divisional ergo competition (rowing machines for the uninitiated). The team spirit across all of the Divisions truly shone through, with the mascots cheering from the side lines and loud, enthusiastic supporters throughout. A special mention also should go to the brave souls who shaved their heads for the Oddballs charity. It was a fantastic end to the first term for the four new day Divisions, and a great foundation for the term ahead.
This term looks set to be just as busy, with the upcoming College production of The Addams Family (taking place on 9, 10 and 11 February), Divisional quiz, and exams all on the horizon.
Please do get in touch with any of the Pastoral Divisional Leads if you have any questions, comments, or queries. We look forward to seeing some of you next weekend at the College Parade on Sunday 18 January.
