Head’s Weekly Update
As you read through this newsletter you will get a sense of the depth of work that has been going on behind the scenes. I am determined to ensure that September starts with pace and purpose and that your children relish their daily life at Pangbourne.
Academic Rigour
With one eye on the future, our other eye is firmly on exam season. I want to start by congratulating all pupils taking public examinations for their continued diligence in their revision and attitude towards their exams. As we head towards May Half Term, it is at this point where their energy may start to wane but please continue to encourage them and keep them focussed as the weeks will pass very quickly after Half Term.
I want to thank staff for their hard work in preparing the Year 10s for their recent exams. Whilst I like to maintain a healthy dose of scepticism, the Year 10 results are really positive. There is about a grade of improvement compared to last year’s Y10 exams in terms of both absolute grade and value added. That is a really significant step forward. We have done some analysis of past trends from Y10 exams to the final GCSEs. If we can maintain the normal level of progress shown over the past few years (and I’d hope we can do even better than that), we would achieve nearly 40% 9-7, more than 95% 9-4 and a value added of +1.2. This would place us significantly above our competitors and set our students up well to live a life of choice and opportunity.
Announcement of Student Division Allocations
As you will remember from previous communications, the announcement of the Divisional Allocation of pupils will be emailed to pupils this evening to minimise any disruption to those pupils taking public examinations. Many hours (days) of planning and reviewing have been put into the allocation of pupils to the Divisions by my senior staff, the Pastoral & Learning Support Teams and the Sports Department.
I want to remind everyone that my decision on this matter is final. Dealing with change is an important part of life and an opportunity for pupils to grow and develop resilience and strength of character. This is an opportunity for our students to find out that they are able to rely on themselves to get to the other side – that allows them to build the scaffolding of the sense of self that they will need to rely on for the rest of their lives. We have worked through multiple iterations and reviewed this very carefully. As this is a multi-dimensional model, any change has a knock-on effect and cannot be seen in isolation.
Staffing Update - Boarding Houses and Divisions from September 2025
To coincide with the announcement of the pupils’ Divisions, it is with great pleasure that I can share with you the staff who will be leading the Divisions and Boarding Houses from September 2025. These brand new roles will enhance the pastoral care and support we offer to our pupils and we are excited to be welcoming experienced and passionate staff to join the Pangbourne community to work alongside our existing brilliant staff members.

COLLEGE NEWS THIS WEEK
Diversity Workshop – Reflecting on Community
Last week, our Year 7 pupils took part in a Diversity Workshop that encouraged them to reflect on the meaning of community — this year’s theme for Mental Health Awareness Week, set by the Mental Health Foundation.
Guided by our Lower Sixth Peer Mentors, the workshop explored what makes each of us unique and how we can all play a role in fostering a sense of belonging. It was a brilliant afternoon of learning, teamwork and self-reflection — a perfect reminder of the importance of supporting one another in our school community.
At Pangbourne College, community is one of our four key pillars, and it’s heartening to see our pupils embracing these values every day.
Year 10 and 12 students trip to HMS Queen Elizabeth
Last week, our Year 10 and Year 12 CCF students had the incredible opportunity to visit HMS Queen Elizabeth in Portsmouth. It was a memorable day as they explored the ship and gained first-hand insight into life on board one of the Royal Navy’s most advanced aircraft carriers.
The Opening of Wessex House: A Bridge for Young People
On Wednesday, we celebrated the opening of Wessex House, a new supported living facility funded by A Bridge for Young People, a charity long supported by the Pangbourne Parents’ Association (PPA). Wessex House will provide a safe home and vital support for nine young care leavers as they transition to independent living.
Our Sixth Form students have also stepped up, raising funds for the charity through various initiatives, including a skydive. They are close to their £9,000 goal — help them reach it by donating here.

All students will need a mouthguard for use in contact sport participation at school this coming year.
Titan Mouthguards will be catering for all students wishing to purchase a custom-fit mouthguard and will be visiting the school on Thursday 11 September 2025 15:20 - 17:50.
Titan also offer a remote E-Fitting service, allowing pupils to have their mouthguards fitted and received in advance of the start of the 2025/2026 school year.
If you wish to take advantage of either service, please complete your online order form by clicking here.
Titan suggest that orders should be placed in advance of fitting sessions at the school to avoid any delays on the day of fitting itself or with getting guards back to you. There is a £5 administration fee on all orders placed on or after the day of your child’s fitting at school.
Any questions relating to mouthguards or any of the details above should be sent directly to Titan (not to school staff) via their customer service email address: info@titanmouthguards.com
Years 9 -11

Exams for Year 9 will be held in the week commencing 9 June. These are important exams which give us an indication of pupil progress through the year and will inform setting as they move into Year 10. Support for the pupils:
Revision guidance documents will be shared on Google Classroom, which tell pupils what content they need to revise and where they can find revision materials. This document is also available for Parents on the School Portal by clicking here and then the 'Academic - Exams' category.
Pupils have been learning about memory and effective revision strategies during their Theory of Learning lessons during the year.

The intensity of the GCSE has stepped up this week and most subjects have now had their first paper. Pupil conduct in the exam venues has been good and the feedback on the papers is that they seem to have been fair. It would be helpful if parents could reinforce the message of punctuality for the pre-exam blasts and the exams themselves. Pupils must be at the exam venue and ready to enter the exam 20 minutes before the scheduled start time. For those pupils who have attended the pre-exam blast, the teachers will make sure that they are ready at the correct time. If pupils choose not to attend the blast, it is their responsibility to make sure that they are at the exam venue at the appropriate time. Good luck to the pupils in the Chemistry, PE, English Language, Computer Science, French, RS and Physics exams next week.
A programme of focused revision sessions has been organised for most subjects which have GCSE examinations next week. We strongly recommend that students do come into school for these as they will help secure core content, practise vital skills and revise what the papers look like. These are being put on in addition to the pre-exam blasts which will happen as already communicated.
The sessions will run as follows:
Tuesday morning Periods 1, 2 and 3 GCSE French revision, completing a listening paper together (vital to practise this in advance of the exam) and a reading paper.
Tuesday afternoon from 13:30 - 14:30 GCSE RS revision focusing on core topics for the second paper
Wednesday afternoon from 13:30 - 15:00 GCSE Physics revision focusing on practice of past questions and skills to apply to them
Thursday afternoon from 13:30 - 15:00 - GCSE English Language non-fiction texts and 15:30 - 16:30 English Language transactional writing
These sessions will be really important in checking core content knowledge and the application of this to questions. They are invaluable examination practice. There will also be the opportunity for students to ask individual questions which they may have. I will send out further details to students via the google classroom. We really hope to see the vast majority of students at these sessions.

Media BTEC - lessons will continue as normal. Unless students have an exam at that time, they are expected to attend to prepare for the Unit 1 resit.
Art - lessons will continue as normal. Unless students have an exam at that time, they are expected to attend to be working on their coursework.
There is no study leave for these exams - students are expected in College for the whole week. The exams have also been scheduled so that activities and sport can be attended as normal. If they are not in an exam or attending lessons in one of the subjects listed above, they should be revising. The library will be available for revision throughout the week.

SPORT
YEAR 10 EDDIE SELECTED FOR SCOTTISH QUALIFIED PROGRAMME
Our Year 10 pupil, Eddie has been selected as a part of the Scottish Qualified Programme for rugby and recently represented them in an internal fixture. This means he has been identified by the Scottish Rugby Union as a player of potential. He is also part of our Ealing Player Pathway and is being supported by Pangbourne's Sports Performance Programme (SPP).
Mr Ben Sainsbury, Director of Rugby, stated: 'Eddie is a very committed player and has taken the opportunities in front of him so far. This has meant he has developed hugely in the last 2 years.'
Director of Sport, Mr Sam Hewick, commented: 'I look forward to seeing Eddie continue to develop whilst being a part of the SPP. It is designed specifically to support pupils on these sorts of pathways and gives them opportunities to enter them. Well done to Ed for his hard work, I am sure he will continue to improve with this level of commitment and focus.'
BERKSHIRE HOCKEY DEVELOPMENT AWARD FOR CAITLIN
We are thrilled to announce that Year 9 pupil, Caitlin has been awarded a Berkshire Hockey Association Development Award for her exceptional progress and commitment to the Berkshire Under 14 Girls Team during the 2024-25 season.
The Berkshire Hockey Association commended Caitlin for impressing the coaching team with her dedication and skill. We are immensely proud of her achievement and look forward to watching her continue to thrive on the hockey field.
U13A CRICKET VS REDDAM HOUSE
Pangbourne started strong in their cricket match against Reddam House, with Hugo and Max setting a steady foundation through a composed 50-run partnership. Their confident performance anchored the innings, helping Pangbourne reach a respectable total of 94 runs for 5 wickets.
Carrying that momentum into the field, Pangbourne struck early, taking a wicket in the very first over. The bowling attack remained relentless with Freddie, Bertie, and Max each claiming two wickets during impressive spells. The entire team backed up the bowlers with sharp fielding, eventually dismissing Reddam House on the final ball for 76 runs.
It was an excellent all-round performance from Pangbourne, with standout efforts in batting, bowling, and fielding. A well-deserved victory and a proud moment for the team!
SHREWSBURY REGATTA
Last weekend’s regatta in Shrewsbury was a remarkable event for our Year 9 rowing crews, showcasing their hard work and determination. The J14 A Quad excelled, winning all their heats and securing a gold medal — a fantastic achievement for the team.
In other races, the J14 Open Double Sculls faced tough competition and lost to Grosvenor RC. The J14 Open Coxed Quad A Boat delivered a stellar performance, winning their first round against Grange School easily, the semi-final by one length, and the final by two lengths to emerge as event winners. Congratulations to the crew: Zachary, Oliver, Otto, Leo and Tom.
Meanwhile, the J14 Open Coxed Quad B Boat narrowly lost to Grange School by just 0.5 lengths in the first round. In the J14 Open Single Sculls, our rower put in a strong effort but was bested by Grosvenor RC by 3.75 lengths.
All the boys and girls crews competing did exceptionally well, and their efforts deserve to be celebrated. We hope to keep up this momentum as we approach the National Schools Regatta.
DIVISIONAL UPDATES
Divisional updates will be fortnightly. Next update on Friday 23 May.
