Head’s Weekly Update

It has been another busy week at the College. It was great to experience my first 100% Colour Run, although I had to fake an injury to get out of being forced to run it! The campus really comes into its own during these sunny days and it has been a glorious week. I made some concessions to our usual uniform standards during the hot weather but we expect all students to revert back to the standard from Tuesday next week.

This can be a particularly punishing time of year for Year 11 and Upper Sixth students and our thoughts and best wishes are with them as they start exam season. There is a lot happening in the next few weeks so do please read the information below and ensure any key dates are in the diary.

Some particular highlights from the week have included:

  • Open Morning Last Weekend
Thank you to all students, staff and parents who helped out for the Open Morning last Saturday.  It was a brilliant morning and it was especially great to see our new Low Ropes course in action - it proved to be very popular from what I saw!

  • 100% Colour Run
I thoroughly enjoyed watching students take part in the 100% Colour Run on Monday afternoon. We have some very talented runners amongst our pupil body but it was also great to see those who aren’t so keen on running push themselves to complete the course.

  • Year 8 Camping Trip to Rushall Farm
Our Year 8 pupils had a brilliant time on their camping trip to Rushall Farm and enjoyed the weather. Thank you to all the staff who accompanied them on the trip.

  • Attracting and Retaining High Calibre Staff
One of the core roles of a Head is to attract and retain the very best staff for our students. I have been delighted with the recent recruitment round we have successfully undertaken - the calibre of the candidates has been first class. I look forward to updating parents in the near future once the onboarding process has been completed.

Best wishes

Oliver Knight

COLLEGE NEWS THIS WEEK

100% COLOUR RUN

Another successful 100% Colour Run was held on Monday with nearly all of the pupils taking part. They enjoyed a 3km - 5km loop around the school which incorporated part of our new obstacle course this year. This event raised money for our Community Fund which supports a range of local charities.

UPPER SIXTH LEAVERS PHOTOS

On Thursday our Upper Sixth students had their Leavers photos outside the back of Devitt House. This is an annual tradition for our Upper Sixth students and captures a brilliant moment that acts as a memory for when our students leave us.

PANGBOURNE PROMS 2025: OPEN-AIR SUMMER CONCERT

Join us on Friday 20 June at 18:00 for a relaxed and enjoyable evening of live music performed by Pangbourne pupils. The event will be held on Devitt Lawn with stunning views across our surrounding Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This family-friendly concert is the perfect way to spend a summer evening — bring a picnic, unwind with friends and family, and enjoy live performances that highlight the musical life of the College. This event will be an opportunity for Pangbournians, past and present, to come together and to celebrate the College's positive community impact. It promises to be a fabulous end of year celebration.

Tickets are £15 per adult (under 18s free). To purchase your tickets please click on the link here.

UPCOMING EVENTS

NOTICES

  • In last week's Parent Newsletter the date for the Divisional Drama competition this term was incorrectly shown as Monday 30 June.  We apologise for this error and confirm that the Divisional Drama competition will be taking place on Tuesday 1 July.

  • Year 7 and 8 exams will take place between Monday 2 June and Friday 6 June.

Year 9 exams will take place between Monday 9 June and Friday 13 June.

There is an in-person Year 7 and 8 parents'/guardians’ evening on Friday 20 June.  More information will be sent out closer to the time.

Years 9 -11

  • Well done to the vast majority of Year 10 who have completed their school examinations today.

As a year group, I am so pleased with the way they have conducted themselves and the fact they've been punctual to all their exams which bodes well for next year. I hope the experience of answering questions under proper exam conditions and in Drake Hall will have prepared them well for this time next year.

Teachers are now busy marking all the papers and there will be a grade card with their results out soon in readiness for the Parents' & Guardians’ Evening on Tuesday 13 May. We hope that you, along with your child, will be able to attend this vital meeting where the exams will be discussed and next steps for your child's progress in all their subjects will be laid out.

  • Many Year 11 pupils have had their Modern Language speaking exams this week - well done to them for getting on with these calmly.  Next week sees the start of written exams: Drama, German and Business, along with GCSE PE moderation. Individual pupil exam timetables can be found here.

Please refer to the updated candidate handbook which is on the portal if you have any questions about the conduct of exams, including what to do if your child is going to be late etc.

Until Half Term students should still be attending lessons unless:

    • They are in an exam

    • There is less than 30 minutes remaining in a lesson after an exam finishes (e.g. if their exam finishes at 10:50, they would not be expected to attend the remainder of P3 but they should attend P4 at 11:15)

    • It is P3, P4 or P5 before an afternoon exam

After Half Term, pupils are on study leave and are not expected in lessons. Teachers have been asked to try and keep themselves available in the periods where they would have had lessons if pupils want to come in for additional support.

Support clinics are available for pupils to seek individual support from their teachers. The schedule can be found by clicking here.

We strongly recommend that Year 11 attend the pre-exam blast before each of their exams (at 8.45-9.15 for a morning exam) and (1.15-1.45) for an afternoon exam.

Finally, after Half Term, intensive subject revision sessions will be run by departments the day or session before an exam takes place. The schedules for both of these revision support sessions can be found by clicking here.

Finally, to make sure that pupils are as comfortable as possible during their exams, they can choose to wear sports kit instead of No2s from Thursday 8 May onwards if they prefer. Please note that if they choose this then the standard rules of sports kit (e.g. in relation to jewellery) apply.

SIXTH FORM

  • Many Sixth Form students have already started their exams - well done to them for getting on with these calmly. Individual pupil exam timetables can be found here.

Please refer to the updated candidate handbook which is on the portal if you have any questions about the conduct of exams, including what to do if your child is ill etc.

FRED MAKES INDEPENDENT SCHOOL LAMBS SELECTION

Fred (Upper Sixth, Macquarie and Captain of Rugby) has been selected as a part of the Independent School Lambs. This is a team that is selected from all of the Independent Schools in the UK and we have a proud history of providing players for this team. Furthermore, this is testament to Fred's commitment and development as a rugby player, who before this year had not gained any representative status. Well done, Fred.

LOTTIE IS CHOSEN TO JOIN THE BRITISH SHOWJUMPING PERFORMANCE PATHWAY

Congratulations to Lottie (Year 9, St George) who has been chosen to join the British Showjumping performance pathway for the GB team selection. Well done to Lottie - we look forward to following her progress closely.

Big thanks to Sandford Springs Golf Club for hosting the College for our annual Whitmore-Price trophy. Henry took the Stableford competition but Boyd cleaned up the longest drive, nearest the pin and the main competition with a gross 85. The trophy has only left Hesperus Division once since 2013.

GOLF - WHITMORE-PRICE TROPHY

Although the school hockey season may be over, our girls are still putting in the hours and hard work outside of school.

Well done to Amelia, Lucy and Harriet who became league winners with their U16 Oxfordshire County Hockey team. Also, well done to Gracie and Caitlin who qualified for another National Final with their U14 Reading Hockey Club Juniors team - best of luck in the final.

Wishing Mia (Upper Sixth) the best of luck for this weekend when she is representing Reading Hockey Club Women’s 1st XI at the England Hockey Premier Division Finals in Nottingham. Mia is the top goal scorer at Reading for the 1st XI with 13 league goals this season. We look forward to hearing the results.

STUDENT HOCKEY SUCCESS

Congratulations to the WJ15 4+ (Women Junior Under 15) taking a Gold medal at the Junior Inter Regional Regatta representing Thames Upriver Region.
