Academic Rigour
One of the many things we are currently working on at Pangbourne is student self-belief and self efficacy. This can become a self-fulfilling and self-limiting prophecy and some very interesting research has been done in America around student attitudes to self and its link to achievement.
Simon Sinek is an author whose work resonates with these studies. Sinek looked at the role positive self-talk played amongst elite tennis players. In his study Sinek compared the top 25 tennis players on the circuit and why five players stood head and shoulders above the rest. Sinek asked what separated them; especially as diet, coaching and work ethic were all equal across the top 25.
Sinek discovered that the gap between the greatest and the good came down to one thing. How they talked to themselves between each point. The top five all had a unique internal conversation during each match:
When they scored: "I love this game."
When they missed: "Wait till you see what I do next."
The mind influenced how they played and their body followed these words. Their heart rate dropped, they were more relaxed and energy was preserved. In other words, they were still loose when their opponent was tightening. Sinek argues that the difference wasn't noticeable immediately but by the final set, they had built a physical edge entirely from words no one else heard.
So over the next 12-18 months, Mrs Hayward has taken on the challenge of enabling all students at Pangbourne to reframe their internal monologue. We have seen some green shoots this year around sporting success and some great early exam data. However, for us to be truly successful, we want every student at Pangbourne, regardless of prior experience or attainment, to believe that with hard work anything is possible. This requires re-writing their internal monologue and harnessing the power of positive self-talk.
Adventure
Wednesday saw our inaugural Prep Schools Challenge Day. It was a huge success and involved students battling it out over a series of adventure challenges and tasks. Moulsford left victorious as the overall winners and I am looking forward to hosting the event again next year.
The count down is also on for the inaugural Three Rivers Challenge. This is a mammoth undertaking by the students involved but it is something that will give them a set of experiences to help shape their internal conversation to one of self-belief and perseverance. I am trying to persuade Mr Poynter to put a staff team together, safe in the knowledge we will be pummelled by the students!
Community
I want to personally thank everyone who supported our very first Giving Day - to raise over £21,000 is a truly incredible achievement and far exceeded our target of £5,000. The enthusiasm, generosity and community spirit shown throughout the event was exceptional and students experienced, first hand, what it means to be a force for good in an imperfect world. These funds will help transform lives through Transforming Futures, providing transformational bursary support to care-experienced young people, while also supporting important local educational charities through the Pangbourne College Community Fund. We are enormously grateful to everyone who helped make this event a success and created such a strong benchmark for future giving events.
I would also like to thank all parents who watched the100% Colour Run and participated in the Divisional fundraising activities on the Quad. Students and Divisional staff organised a wide range of activities and we want to go bigger and better next year.
We are extremely fortunate to have been able to secure Papagena, an international vocal quintet pioneering music for women’s voices, in concert in the Chapel on Monday 11 May. The previous concert in March was fantastic and this event will be an evening of nourishment for the soul. I highly recommend it and to reserve a ticket please click here.
Leadership
The newly formed student leadership team held their first meeting earlier this week, chaired by the new Chief Cadet Captains of the College, Eva and Isaac. The new structure has been designed by outgoing Chiefs Faith and Ed and is designed to enable greater student involvement in the leading of the College. High on this week's agenda was the discussion of proposals to redraft and refine the current reward and sanctions policy. The redraft is aiming to bring rewards more to the forefront and make them meaningful and to ensure sanctions can be applied consistently and help students learn from their mistakes. Student input on this is crucial in ensuring a calm and happy environment and several pertinent points were raised for the Senior Team to consider ahead of September.
Best wishes,
Oliver Knight

Grade Cards
During the year, we have gradually been transitioning our academic tracking into the Pupil Progress system. Printouts from this system were provided at the Parents’ and Guardians’ meeting in the Lent Term. This term, we are trialling using the system for Grade Cards and we hope that it provides more useful information and a clearer indication of areas of strength and development. The level of detail will build as we add more assessments into the system. You will be able to access the summary through the Portal from 16:00 today from the 'My Child's Documents' section. The top sheet contains the overview and then the subsequent pages go into more detail for each subject.
The terminology used in the report is:
Minimum Target Grade - this is determined by the CAT4 baseline assessments which have been sat by all of the pupils. This assessment suggests the minimum grade that the pupil should be targeting, based on the average outcomes of pupils with a similar baseline profile. We will always push the pupils to achieve the best grade they can but this grade represents a 'line in the sand' that we can use to check that good progress is being made.
Average Unit Grade - this is the average performance across the assessments which have been entered into the system.
Teacher Predicted Grade - this is a forecast by the teachers of a likely outcome if the current level of progress is maintained. A '+' or '-' after the grade indicates whether the pupil is projected to be towards the top of the grade and should push on to aim for something higher or at risk of falling to a lower grade if the level of effort wavers.

Dear Parents and Carers,
Important Updates & Successes
First, some exciting news: the English Language coursework grades will be shared with students and parents this week via the Grade Card. This is a great moment to celebrate their hard work and progress so far!
This term, our Year 10 students are diving into their first English Literature coursework component. We are focusing on modern drama through J. B. Priestley’s An Inspector Calls, and it has been wonderful to see the students engaging so deeply with the play's big questions around morality, collectivism and the Edwardian values.
Looking ahead to our Literature coursework:
This Week (Planning): Students are currently working on their prep work, which involves planning their essays. This is a vital step to ensure they feel organised and confident before they begin writing.
Next Week (Writing): The formal writing process will begin on Monday 11 May. To give students plenty of time to produce their best work, this will take place across all five English lessons next week.
These sessions will be held under controlled conditions in class. This ensures that every student can work in a focused environment and that the final piece truly reflects their own independent ideas and hard work.
Resources & Keeping it Authentic
To help bring the play to life, all pupils have access to the BBC adaptation via Digital Theatre. Login details are on Google Classroom; it’s a fantastic resource for helping them visualise the characters and the dramatic tension.
We also kindly ask that you review the coursework guidelines with your child, particularly regarding academic integrity and the use of AI. We want to make sure every student’s voice is heard and that the work they submit is entirely their own.
How You Can Help at Home
You don't need to be an English expert to support your child! A little encouragement can go a long way in helping them feel prepared for next week’s writing sessions:
Be a Sounding Board: Ask them to talk through their essay plan. If they can explain their main arguments to you, they’ll find it much easier to write them down in class.
Watch an read together: Re-watching/re-reading key scenes from the play together can be a great way to spark a quick chat about a character’s motives or a sudden plot twist.
Big Ideas: Chat about the play’s themes—like responsibility or fairness—and how they still relate to the world today.
A Quiet Space: Supporting good study habits this week will help them head into Monday feeling refreshed and ready to go.
Thank you for your continued support in helping our pupils develop these important analytical skills. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to get in touch.
Warm regards,
The English Department

And we're off! German and Drama have already happened, and on Monday everyone's in English Literature. There is a degree of tiredness among Year 11 this week, so please do make sure your children get to bed at a reasonable time each night over the weekend - there is no point trying to cram stuff in late into the night, a decent night's sleep will be far more effective in terms of performance on the day.
Here is a reminder of timings for your children when they have morning and afternoon exams:
AM exams:
8.00 register in division
8.15 exam walkthrough
8.45 outside exam venue
9.00 exam start
After their exam has finished students can have a 30 minute break. This will mean most should be going back into lessons at some point during period 4.
PM exams
If students have an exam in the afternoon they may go to the library for period 4 to revise. They should have lunch at 12.15.
1.00 exam walkthrough
1.20 outside exam venue
1.30 exam start
The usual 30 minute break applies after the exam and then students should attend all activities/sport/lessons as normal.
Finally, on Friday 22 May from 2pm we shall have a student-planned, relaxed afternoon of fun on Big Side with inflatables, mini-golf, an ice-cream van and a BBQ to celebrate being half way through GCSEs and study leave starting. A google form will be coming out soon for you to give your consent for the cost of this to be added to the school bill - it will work out at approximately £25/head.

In a public announcement this week, Ofqual’s Chief Regulator Sir Ian Bauckham appealed directly to students not to take mobile phones or smart devices into exam halls.
Last summer, mobile phone and other smart device offences accounted for 2,225 cases (44.3% of all student malpractice), up from 2,140 cases (41.5%) in summer 2024.
Of those cases, 545 resulted in students being disqualified from some or all qualifications. Mobile phone and other smart device offences remain the most common category of student malpractice.
Sixth Form
-
With exams now underway, it has been great to see how all the students have been knuckling down to their revision but also collaboratively working in the Sixth Form Centre. They have been reminded that they do need to pace themselves over the next few weeks and make the most of all advice and support being provided by teachers.
A reminder that AM exams start at 09.00 and PM exams at 13.30. Students are advised to give themselves enough time in the morning, especially if driving in themselves, to ensure that they are not late. If there are any problems on the day they need to contact myself and also email exams@pangbourne.com.
Pre-exam blasts will be taking place before exams - though optional - attendance is recommended for those last minute tips and words of wisdom from staff.
Students have all now also confirmed their firm and insurance choices on UCAS so they have been reminded to apply for Student Finance if they have applied for 2026 entry. To ensure finance is in place for September the deadline is Friday 15 May.

It is exam time for a number of the Lower Sixth at the moment which is all good preparation for the Trials and beyond! It has been lovely to have also received feedback from recent visitors to the College about how impressed they have been with their Lower Sixth tour guides.
With 5 weeks until the Summer Trials, students are being asked to use their study periods constructively and bed in those study habits that will hold them in good stead next year. An outline of what they should be focused on will be shared next week.
Opportunities for work experience and general careers research continue to be shared on Google Classroom. They should also now be conducting research into University courses and locations.

COLLEGE NEWS THIS WEEK
Pangbourne Giving Day & 100% Colour Run
Pangbourne College’s inaugural Giving Day was a tremendous success, with the Pangbournian Community raising £21,106 in just 30 hours to celebrate 30 years of co-education. Support from pupils, parents, staff, Old Pangbournians and friends of the College exceeded all expectations, with matched donations doubling the impact of every gift.
Funds raised will support the Transforming Futures initiative and the Pangbourne College Community Fund, helping to provide life-changing Sixth Form bursaries and support local educational and community projects. The total raised has brought the College close to fully funding a transformational bursary for one pupil for an entire academic year.
Highlights of the day included the vibrant 100% Colour Run and creative Divisional fundraising stalls, which brought the whole community together in a spirit of energy, inclusivity and celebration.
Beyond the fundraising total, Giving Day showcased the generosity, unity and lasting strength of the Pangbournian Community. Thank you to everyone who helped make this first event such a success.
Upper Sixth Leavers 2026
Our Upper Sixth students had their Leavers photos outside the back of Devitt House. This is an annual tradition for our Upper Sixth students and captures a brilliant moment that acts as a memory for when our students leave us.
Wallingford and Junior Sculling Rowing Regattas
The College Boat Club opened their 2026 regatta account with a successful weekend of racing at Wallingford Regatta and the Junior Sculling Regatta both of which were held at Dorney Lake, the London 2012 Summer Olympic venue.
On Sunday 3 May, the J16 coxed four of Harry M, Rory S-B, Lewis R, Alex O, and cox Harrison R qualified 5th fastest for the six lane final in the Stakhanovite Cup. In the final, the crew were 2.5 seconds quicker in their first 500m than they had been in their heat and were led only by the South African development squad boat. By 1000m Pangbourne had a 0.9 second lead over Dulwich College. Pangbourne held off Dulwich and the King's School Ely to win by 2 seconds. A superb results for the five boys and their coach Mr Brightmore.
On Monday, the J15s raced at the Junior Sculling Regatta. The format of this race is a time trial followed by seeded finals based on the crews' speed in the time trial. The J15 coxed quad of George G, Fergus B, Leo W, Otto T, and cox Zach R were the standout crew of the day. The crew produced a solid time trial and placed 8th, this is a step-up of 17 places from the equivalent event at the end of the Spring term. In the side by side racing Pangbourne's lack of experience was shown up a little out of the blocks and in the final 500m. This saw the crew come in 4th place in the B final placing 10th nationally. This is a huge step-up over a short period of time.
Both these crews, and all of our competing students should take heart from these results as the club continues to prepare for the National Schools’ Regatta on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 May.
Mr Ed Green, Director of Rowing
SPORT
Cricket U12B Fixture vs Sherfield
On Wednesday 29 April, the U12B team played against Sherfield School. Sherfield won the toss and chose to bat first, they scored 70 runs. Pangbourne’s bowling was good and was nice to see everyone trying to bowl. Pangbourne batted second and score 73 runs meaning we won by 3 runs. It was a good game and the boys and girls had a lot of fun and were very pleased with the win.
Mr Callum Smith, Cricket Coach
U18 XI Cricket Fixture vs St Benedict’s
Despite a dominant start from St Benedict’s powered by a quick-fire 50 from one of their opening batsmen, Pangbourne clawed their way back into the match through Louis B’s two crucial wickets and Alex B’s sharp fielding successfully restricting the opposition to 160. Bertie D provided a resilient platform in the chase while Alex G fought to accelerate the scoring, but ultimately the target proved too steep for the Pangbourne boys in a hard-fought loss.
Mr Ben Sainsbury, Head of Cricket
DIVISIONAL UPDATES
Divisional Dinners

Harbinger - Saturday 6 June at Goring and Streatley Golf Club. Please book your tickets here.
Illawarra - Friday 12 June at Goring and Streatley Golf Club. Watch this space for booking information.
Harbinger
The last two weeks have both been very busy. On Tuesday 28 April, we took part in the Divisional debate, a team composed of myself, Kendal J and Louis VdM. After a good effort from all involved we ultimately lost to Hesperus on the topic of lowering the voting age to 16. On Tuesday 5 May, we had our whole College Giving day and 100% Colour Run. The 100% Colour Run is always an amazing event full of fun and lots of enjoyment. Incredible effort from all involved, special mention to Joe B, one of our Year 11s for being the first senior boy passing the finish line. An amazing achievement for which he should be very proud of himself. Best of luck to the Year 11s and Upper Sixth starting their exams.
Clara (Chief Cadet Captain of Harbinger)
Hesperus
A really big thank you to everyone who gave their best at the 100% Colour Run and to those who generously donated. This is an annual event which is taken place around the College with powdered paint to make the runners colourful and visible to the finish line. What an amazing event! The students absolutely loved it, and to spot the Hesperus Elks out on the course, which added to the fun atmosphere. The three Hesperus Elks were fabulous to see running/walking the course to promote the "Guess the Elk” and “Sabotage the Elks” fundraiser. Alongside the excitement, the Hesperus Debate team has been hard at work, waiting for the finals between Hesperus and Illawarra. In the first round Hesperus was competing against Harbinger, resulting in a clear victory for Hespurus. Finally, the GCSE and A Level students are also busy preparing for their upcoming exams, among the many other great activities we’ve been involved in.
Phoebe (Chief Cadet Captain of Hesperus)
Illawarra
This week we have been busy getting active outside and enjoying the new sunny weather, including running the 100% Colour Run which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. We were also raising money through our stall of 'splat the teacher'. We are in the midst of preparing for the Div debate final next week where we are competing against Hesperus and wish everyone speaking the best of luck. We are also wishing all the GCSE and A Level students the best of luck in their upcoming exams.
Amelia (Chief Cadet Captain of Illawarra)
Macquarie
This week we enjoyed the 100% Colour Run on Tuesday, and it was wonderful to see all the Macquarie parents there supporting the event. Our “Lob a Choc” stall was also great fun and helped add to our overall fundraising total. Thank you to everyone who donated so generously and helped make the event such a success.
With the recent fine weather, students have also been able to spend more time outside playing games together on the lawn. We have been fortunate enough to enjoy our new Spikeball set and volleyball net set up outside the house making the most of being outdoors during all the break times. It was nice to have the whole house marching together again in an extended Parade practice on Wednesday, although there is definitely some more room for improvement before Founders’ Day. We want to ensure our uniform is looking good for the final parade of term so we are preparing by making sure shoes are being polished by all members of the Division.
Meanwhile, our Year 11 and Upper Sixth pupils are working incredibly hard as exam season begins. Some students have already started their exams, with most beginning next week. We wish them all the best of luck.
