As we approach the end of the school year, the excitement for the summer break is building. June brings longer days, warmer weather, and for many of our older students, the freedom of post-exam celebrations and summer music festivals. While we want our young people to enjoy their well-deserved break, summer also brings specific risks. This month, we are focusing on vital safety advice regarding open water and festival environments.
The Urgent Reality of Open Water Danger
Recent weeks have brought devastating news across the UK, with national emergency services issuing urgent water safety warnings following more than ten tragic drowning fatalities during the warm spell. Heartbreakingly, many of these victims were teenagers who got into difficulty in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs.
Locally, we must address a specific and growing concern: bridge jumping at Pangbourne Meadows.
With the meadows being a highly popular spot for sunbathing and socialising, large groups of teenagers are regularly spotted jumping from Whitchurch Bridge into the River Thames. What feels like a harmless thrill or a way to cool down carries extreme, life-threatening risks:
Hidden Hazards: The stretch of river below the bridge contains hidden debris, currents, and remnants from historical structures. Because the riverbed changes and waste floats downstream, jumping "into the unknown" can result in catastrophic impact injuries.
Cold Water Shock: Even on a scorching hot June day, the deep water of the Thames remains dangerously cold. Jumping in triggers an involuntary gasp reflex, sudden panic, and an immediate loss of swimming ability—even for the strongest swimmers.
What to teach your child: If they see someone in trouble, they should remember Call, Tell, and Throw. Call 999 immediately (ask for the Fire Service for inland water), tell the person to float on their back (Float to Live), and throw a rescue lifeline or buoyancy aid to them.
Pollution Pitfalls: Testing vs. Reality at Pangbourne
You may have seen in the news that Pangbourne Meadow has officially been designated as a national bathing water spot. While this is a positive step that means the Environment Agency will now test the water weekly, designation does not automatically mean the water is always clean or safe.
Local environmental campaigns and MPs have raised serious concerns about water quality in the area. Specifically, the River Pang, which flows directly into the Thames just above the Pangbourne bathing site, is highly vulnerable to pollution. Upstream issues—including untreated sewage discharges and storm overflows from water treatment works—mean that bacteria levels can spike rapidly, particularly after heavy rainfall.
Check Before They Dip: If your teen plans to paddle or swim at the meadows, please encourage them to check live sewage discharge trackers (such as the Thames Water status map or the Surfers Against Sewage app) before entering the water.
The "After-Rain" Rule: Avoid the water entirely for at least 48 hours after heavy rain, as agricultural runoff and overflow pollution are at their highest during these times.
Festival Season: Managing the Risks
For many secondary school students, attending their first day-festival or weekend camping event is a rite of passage. While these events are about music and memories, peer pressure and crowded environments require careful preparation. Some suggested actions:
The "Group Plan" is Non-Negotiable: Before they pass through the gates, ensure your child has an agreed-upon meeting point with their friends in case they lose phone signal or battery. Never leave the main festival site or walk home alone.
Substance Awareness and Peer Pressure: Festivals can expose young people to alcohol and illegal substances, including highly unpredictable synthetic drugs. Have open, honest conversations about how to say no, and emphasise that they should never accept drinks or substances from strangers.
The Vulnerability of Exhaustion: Dehydration, lack of sleep, and intense heat make teenagers highly vulnerable. Remind them to pace themselves, drink plenty of water, and look out for their peers.
Keeping the Lines of Communication Open
The most effective way to keep our students safe this summer is to ensure they can talk to you without the fear of getting into trouble. Make sure your child knows that if a situation goes wrong—whether they are at a festival or find themselves peer-pressured near the river—their safety is your absolute priority and they can call you for help no matter what.

This June, the Pangbournian Peloton invites our entire community to come together in remembrance, reflection, and shared endeavour through the 258 Challenge.
Between 7–13 June, we are asking members of the Pangbournian community - wherever you are in the world - to cycle 258km in honour of those who fell during the Falklands conflict and whose names adorn the chapel walls.
As custodians of the Chapel and hosts of the annual Falklands Islands Memorial Service, the College holds a unique and privileged responsibility to remember the courage and sacrifice of those connected to the conflict. The 258 Challenge offers a meaningful way for the wider community to take part in that act of remembrance, whether near or far from Pangbourne.
You can complete the distance however suits you during the week: one long ride, several shorter outings, or alongside friends and family. Every kilometre is a tribute.
We recognise that requests for charitable support can feel frequent, and the principal aim of the challenge is participation, remembrance, and bringing our community together. However, for those who may wish to support financially, donations can be made to SAMA82 Falklands, a charity that supports Falklands veterans and their families through welfare assistance, remembrance initiatives, veteran community networks, and support for those facing hardship or trauma connected to the conflict.
We would love to see the challenge unfold across our community, so please share your photos and progress online:

The focus for the Lower Sixth needs to be on preparation for their Trials with 10 College Days to go. They need to access the advice and guidance provided by teachers.
They will also be starting the UCAS process after Half Term so they are encouraged to continue doing research on universities and potential pathways alongside completing super-curricular activities like work experience, MOOCs and reading beyond the curriculum.
The exam timetable can be viewed here and the exam guidance can be viewed here.

As we are now over half-way through the summer exam series, students seem to now be in the flow of resting and revising! Study leave commences from after Half Term. Teachers will still be available for advice and revision. Students are advised to contact teachers and ask when is best for them to come in each day.
A reminder that AM exams start at 09.00 and PM exams at 13.30. Students are advised to give themselves enough time in the morning, especially if driving in themselves, to ensure that they are not late. If there are any problems on the day they need to contact myself and also email exams@pangbourne.com.
Pre-exam blasts will be taking place before exams - though optional - attendance is recommended for those last minute tips and words of wisdom from staff.

UPCOMING EVENTS
COLLEGE NEWS THIS WEEK
Classic Car Show
On Saturday, the Classic Car Show has celebrated another outstanding year, welcoming hundreds of visitors to Pangbourne College for a spectacular day of classic motoring, family entertainment and community fundraising. The event enjoyed glorious weather throughout the day, helping to attract a fantastic turnout of vehicle exhibitors, enthusiasts, families and supporters from across Berkshire and beyond.
Organisers are delighted to announce that the event has raised in excess of £18,000 for charitable causes, with final figures still being calculated. Funds raised will support the show's longstanding charity partner, Footsteps Foundation, which helps children with neurological conditions and movement disorders. The Farmers' Market also raised valuable funds for the Pangbourne College Community Fund and Transforming Futures.
Visitors enjoyed an exceptional display of vintage, classic, rare and performance vehicles, alongside a variety of food and drink offerings, family attractions and the ever-popular Sporting Bears experience rides. The opportunity to enjoy passenger rides in an incredible selection of classic and performance cars proved, once again, to be one of the highlights of the day. The success of this year's event has already generated excitement for the future, and organisers are pleased to confirm that the Pangbourne Classic Car Show will return in 2028, continuing its tradition of bringing together automotive enthusiasts while raising vital funds for deserving causes.
Further details about the 2028 event will be announced in due course.

Community Golf Day
We all had a great day at The Springs Golf Club for our inaugural Pangbournian Community Golf Day last Friday. The weather was perfect and a combination of pupils, parents, staff, Old Pangbournians and a governor enjoyed breakfast, lunch and 18 holes. Well done to Tom H in Year 10 for winning the individual competition, Neil Jeffers and David Mullins for the pairs competition, and Rory P, Cam M and David Mullins tidying up the spot prizes. Huge thanks to Sean Fergusson of Fore Business for organising the day.

National Schools’ Regatta
The last weekend of May was a huge one for our rowers as they competed at the National Schools' Regatta at Dorney Lake.
There were fantastic performances from both the J16 boys and Senior Boys to reach their respective A Finals. Special congratulations go to the Senior girls who qualified 5th fastest for the A Final, and converted their performance into a bronze medal - an incredible achievement.
Our J15 boys and girls also delivered outstanding performances, both finishing 10th nationally in fields of over 60 crews - another huge achievement!
Well done to everyone involved over the weekend, including all of the rowers, the fantastic Pangbourne community who came to support, and of course the brilliant coaches.
